December 26 - Summer of '07 Revisited!

The tradition of playtime on our deck continues for four of Bea and Lily's pups. During the Summer of '07, the pups greatly enjoyed spending time with us on our deck with their assorted stuffed toys. The socialization that they experienced taught them to peacefully coexist and to respect each other's boundaries. This recent session provided many smiles.

December 23 - A Season Of Giving

Life can move in such hectic patterns, days spent in "to do" lists often prevent each of us from giving back and caring about others as much as we might like. However, year round and particularly during the holiday season, the best gift given is often that of listening and offering a warm hug while the best gift received may well be the smiles which erupt on faces following acts of kindness.

With this thought in mind, our eight-month old puppy "Mumbo" (Gleanntan GotHappyFeet) and I headed to the Ronald McDonald House (RMHC) in Hershey, PA bedecked in our holiday finery to bring gifts, candies, and hugs to the wonderful staff at the RMH as well as the many families who are spending their Christmas holiday at the house, when they are not across the street with their children at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center & Children's Hospital.

Mumbo was a hit with his antlers askew and his plaid holiday bow. He had kisses for all and time to sit and be petted, seeming to know when someone needed more of his time. We listened as couples told us of their premature babies facing challenges in the NICU unit, a young mother told us of her daughter fighting cancer while her daughter's premature daughter was in the PICU, both at Hershey Medical Center, and a young man who completed his recent round of cancer treatments, looking forward to returning home with his mom.

While we were there, I was touched to meet Kris, a young man who arrived with his entire family and friends with hundreds of toys and a large check to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. Two years ago Kris' younger brother died following weeks at the Hershey Medical Center, while Kris and his family stayed at the RMH. In tribute and memory to his brother's loving spirit, Kris invites friends, family, community, and now fellow students at James Madison University to contribute new toys and/or money to brighten the lives of children and families at the RMH during the Christmas holiday. His selfless acts of caring and giving are inspirational reminding us of the true value of giving to make life brighter for someone else.

Throughout the day, Mumbo greeted the families and children who came into the toy room, faces aglow, as they were told to choose any toy for themselves and their brothers/sisters. The smiles, exclamations of glee, wonder and sincere appreciation was heartwarming. - Maida Connor - 12/23/07

December 9

We've just returned from the Christmas Classic of North Carolina consisting of the Greater Hickory KC and Forsyth KC shows in Winston-Salem. It was a most enjoyable and successful weekend. A highlight of the weekend was the Terrier Group 1 awarded to Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" on Saturday, December 8. This was the first time in 5 years that a Skye Terrier won the Terrier Group in the month of December. The last Skye to earn a Group 1 in December (2002) was our very own, Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael", professionally handled by Lisa and Mark Bettis. It is also interesting to note that in the Best in Show lineup with Boz, were three dogs currently ranked in the top ten All Breeds!

Maida and I enjoyed sharing time with friends Joe and Ginger Lindsey, Gina Lindsey, Travis Wright and Kate Kozeliski.

Below are the results and a few photos capturing the memories of the weekend:

November 25

We were at two of the Thanksgiving Cluster shows in Maryland this past weekend. On Saturday, Gleanntan Going For The Silver - "Duffy" took Winners Dog and Best of Winners for his first point. Duffy is owned and adored by Judy Fatzinger and was handled both days by Maida Connor. Gleanntan Gale's Grace - "Bailey" was Winners Bitch and Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme ' Boz" took Best of Breed. Best of Opposite Sex went to Boz's littermate, Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch - "Glinda" handled by 8-year old junior, Isaac. Isaac first handled Glinda in August and he enjoyed it so much he decided to try it again.

On Sunday, the entry was about the same but the bitch Special, Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch - "Glinda" was absent as she had been entered both days to give Isaac the choice of days to show. There was one additional class bitch in the entry today - a 6 to 9 month puppy bitch from another breeder. The results today were as follows: Gleanntan Going For The Silver - "Duffy" took Winners Dog and Best of Winners for another point. Gleanntan Gale's Grace - "Bailey" took first in the 6 to 9 Puppy Bitch class and went on to Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex for a point. Bailey was very nicely presented by her owner, Kate Kozeliski. Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme ' Boz" took Best of Breed.

We also managed to get two new stacked photos of Duffy and Mackenzie.

For the Thanksgiving Holiday this year, Maida and I traveled from Pennsylvania to Rhode Island to visit with family. Because our young nieces enjoy the Skyes we took four of the dogs with us - Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz", Finnsky Finesse - "Nessie", Gleanntan Gothappyfeet - "Mumbo" and Gleanntan Glorious Legacy - "Mackenzie". As luck would have it, the weather on Thanksgiving morning was in the 60's with nice sunshine burning off the fog. Maida and I decided to take a ride to Fort Adams State Park in Newport, one of our favorites when we lived in Rhode Island. The photo below captures the views from the park with the Newport Bridge in the background.

November 17 - Terrier Night at the Ronald McDonald House - Hershey, PA

Last evening, Maida visited the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, Pennsylvania with two Skyes, 10-year old Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose - "Emily" and her 7-month old grandson, Gleanntan Gothappyfeet - "Mumbo". She was joined by our friends, John and Karen Haggins, who are breeders of Welsh and Airedale Terriers. John and Karen brought one of their 4-year old Welsh Terriers.

We first started taking our Skyes to the Ronald McDonald House in 2004 and in the past 3 years, the level of activity there has increased significantly. More families are bringing their children to the Penn State Children's Hospital for very specialized treatments and the house is a vital and valued source of support and help for those traveling in from a distance. The house is currently in the middle of a major capital campaign to raise funds to enable it to double its capacity from 20 rooms to 35 rooms. The house has a remarkable network of support and the pet therapy program is one part of that network.

Emily (Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose) has visited the house many times. Last evening, she decided to give her grandson, Mumbo (Gleanntan Gothappyfeet) a bit of a tour and she proceeded to jump up on a bed in one of the guest rooms. Of course, it was getting to be close to her bed time so she thought nothing of making herself at home. Mumbo was a big hit with the children as he is smaller and he is filled with enthusiasm for life. He also loves to kiss.

November 12 - What a Weekend - Lots of News!

We were at the two Furniture City Kennel Club shows in Greensboro, North Carolina this past weekend. In the early weeks of the Summer of 2007, we were spending quite a bit of time on the floor with our April puppies. As the pups began to transition from "little eggplants" to promising youngsters, it was very exciting to consider the fun of bringing the pups into the show ring - maybe even many of them at one time! That dream finally came to fruition last weekend.

Shown were the following pups from our litter sired by Ch. Finnsky Gladiator out of Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!:

  • Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick" owned by Gary and Lynn Wolf and handled by Michael Pesare, Maida Connor and Travis S. Wright

  • Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper" owned and handled by Travis S. Wright

  • Gleanntan Going For The Silver - "Duffy" owned by Judy Fatzinger and handled by Maida Connor

A New Addition at Gleanntan

This weekend, we also welcomed a new addition to our family of Skyes - Finnsky Finesse (FIN CH JW-04 Finnsky Design x INT, FIN, S, N, EST CH Olivia Original Sensation) - bred in Finland by Thea and Rolf Dahlbom, Kennel Finnsky; born in September, 2004 and imported to the U.S. in 2005. We are impressed with this girl's sweet temperament, sound conformation, moderate size and lowness, and her crisp medium gray coat. Finesse will be entering the show ring in late 2007 and she will be seeking her AKC Championship in 2008.

October 28 - Middleburg KC

Yesterday (10/27), we were at the Middleburg Kennel Club show in Leesburg, Virginia. The forecast all week was calling for heavy rain and showers into Saturday morning with a chance for clearing as the day progressed. As we awoke at 5 a.m. and began our drive at 7 a.m., the rain was certainly heavy and not particularly inviting for an outdoor show. Fortunately, as ring time approached, the weather improved significantly and the day turned out to be quite sunny and warm.

Four pups from our April litters were entered in their first show at 6 months of age. Gleanntan Gothappyfeet - "Mumbo" (Ch. Gleanntan Getouttadodge x Ch. Gleanntan Stargazer Lily) owned by Gleanntan was handled by his breeder, Michael Pesare. In addition, the following pups from the Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee litter were entered: Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper" owned and handled by Travis S. Wright, Gleanntan Going For The Silver - "Duffy" owned by Judy Fatzinger and handled by Maida Connor and Gleanntan Gale's Grace - "Bailey" owned and handled by Kate Kozeliski.

We also had a wonderful visit with our dear friend, Jo Ann Lyons who came to the show with her niece, Karen. Jo Ann has owned Skyes for well over 30 years and currently owns two of our dogs, Ahriel and Zoe. Jo Ann greatly enjoyed spending time with friends and Skyes and particularly going over the puppies.

The show results on this day were as follows: Winners Dog (from the Bred by Exhibitor class) went to Gleanntan Gothappyfeet - "Mumbo" for his first 2 points at 6 months and 3 days of age. Reserve Winners Dog went to Gleanntan Going For The Silver - "Duffy". Winners Bitch and Best of Winners went to Gleanntan Gale's Grace - "Bailey" for her first 2 points. A special congratulations to Bailey's owner Kate. Kate is new to Skyes and this was Kate and Bailey's very first show together!

Best of Breed went to Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" owned by Travis S. Wright and Gleanntan. Boz went on to a Group 2 with a total entry of 140 terriers. Group 1st went to the #1 Norfolk Terrier, a Coco son.

October 21 - Perfect Outdoor Fall Show

After a weekend off, Maida and I were at the South Jersey Kennel Club show today in Buena, New Jersey, about an hour southeast of Philadelphia. The weather could not have been better for a late October outdoor show, with golden sunshine, temps in the 70's and a light breeze. We had our Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" entered and, making his ring debut, was 6-month old Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick" owned by Gary and Lynn Wolf of Slidell, Louisiana. Both dogs showed well. Mick earned compliments from the judge for his sweet personality and Boz made the cut in the terrier group. We enjoyed sharing the afternoon with our friend, Rosemary Hodgins who drove up from Cape May, NJ. Rosemary owns two of our Skyes, Mitchell and Daisy. We also brought along two additional pups - Gleanntan GotHappyFeet - "Mumbo" and Gleanntan Glorious Legacy - "Mackenzie" for a bit of training stacking and gaiting. All in all, it was a most enjoyable day.

October 9 - STCA National Specialty Weekend

Maida and I are catching up from the four-day Skye Terrier Club of America National Specialty Weekend - Montgomery County Kennel Club. The weekend consisted of Hatboro I on Thursday 10/4; Hatboro II on Friday 10/5; Devon on Saturday 10/6; and culminating on Sunday 10/7 with the National Specialty at Montgomery. This was an interesting year as four different Skyes took Best of Breed each of the four days. The entry the first day was about 11 Skyes and then it went up to 23, 24 and 31.

We are pleased to report that our Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" earned Best of Breed at the Hatboro II show on Friday (entry of 23 with 2 absent) under judge Mrs. Catherine B. Nelson. This honor was particularly rewarding as the judge is a respected breeder of another achondroplastic (dwarf) terrier breed, the Dandie Dinmont.

The weekend gave us a chance to see Skyes that we have previously only admired in photos. There were also wonderful opportunities to visit with Skye friends and to watch judging in a number of other terrier breeds.

Here is a photo of Friday's BOB lineup.

September 30 - Old Dominion Kennel Club

Today we were at the Old Dominion Kennel Club show with our Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz". We were delighted that Boz earned a Group 4 placement in a field of about 155 terriers under judge Mr. Lowell K. Davis. Today was also a special day as we had a wonderful visit with our dear friends Sharon and Bob Trbovich. Sharon and Bob are opening their hearts to 5-year old "Gillie" who returned to us when her owner had to move to an assisted living facility.

September 29 - Warrenton KC - 2007.... and remembering 2005

We were at the Warrenton Kennel Club show today with our Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz". Boz showed beautifully and was one of about 8 to be cut in the terrier group that was ultimately won by the top-winning Airedale from California. It was a bittersweet day as we reflected back on this very show two years ago. On that day, Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael" went all the way to Best in Show to make Skye Terrier breed history.

September 28 - Farewell M4

Our hearts are heavy this evening as we mourn the passing of our much loved Ch. Gleanntan Gee Whillikers - "Michael".

September 21

We are off this weekend - with a long "to do" list and some puppy training in the plans. We are looking forward to the Skye Terrier Club of America National Specialty Weekend - Montgomery County KC in just a couple of weeks. The pups from our April litters (April 17 - Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!) and April 24 (Ch. Gleanntan Getouttadodge x Ch. Gleanntan Stargazer Lily) are just a few weeks too young to compete. Many of them will, however, be making their ring debuts in early November.

Here are the registered names of the Gleanntan youngsters who will be starting soon:

Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick" - owned by Lynn and Gary Wolf
Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper" - owned by Travis S. Wright Ed.D.
Gleanntan Gale's Grace - "Bailey" - owned by Kate Kozeliski

In the evenings, we have been walking the pups in the front yard and in a small portion of the apple orchard across the road from our property. These walking sessions are often followed by a bit of stacking training on the front stairs. Here is a photo of one of the pups with his attention focused on one of the barn cats crossing the yard.

September 16

This past weekend, we were at the Lehigh Valley KC and Berks County KC shows. These two attractive late summer shows always seem to mark our anticipation for the Montgomery Weekend.

On Saturday was the Lehigh Valley KC show in Macungie, PA. We had our Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" entered. The crisp, cool air was very much to his liking and Boz showed with the enthusiasm and smoothness of gait that I have come to admire. We also had a wonderful visit with our friend, Judy Fatzinger and her two Skyes, Ch. Gleanntan Guardian Angel - "Gertie" and Judy's newest addition, the very adorable, Gleanntan Going For The Silver - "Duffy". Also along for the experience and socialization were Mick (5-month old from our April litter - Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee) and Mumbo - Gleanntan GotHappyFeet (Ch. Gleanntan Getouttadodge x Ch. Gleanntan Stargazer Lily). I have included a few photos below.

On Sunday was the Berks County KC show in Kutztown, PA. Another beautiful day provided plenty of opportunities for puppy socialization, puppy walking and visits with friends.

Boz represented the breed well in the group both days.

September 11 - Somerset Hills and Westchester KC shows

Maida and I were at the Somerset Hills KC and Westchester KC shows this past weekend. Saturday's show was the Somerset Hills KC in North Branch, New Jersey. This was the first year that we attended the Somerset Hills show and I was extremely impressed with both the site and the first-rate organization of this show. The grounds were superb with beautiful rings and ringside grooming. The Skye entry at Somerset was 0-0-2-0 which included our Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz". The other entry was absent.

The following day was the Westchester Kennel Club show in Tarrytown, New York. Early on Sunday, we traveled up Route 95 and across the George Washington Bridge, which provided a spectacular view of Manhattan. As we traveled up Route 87 to the show site I thought back to the last time we attended this show in September, 1995. On that crisp, sunny day 12 years ago, our first Skye, Ch. MacFergus' Brindle Stewart took Best of Breed in the final show of his career and our first Gleanntan Skye, Ch. Gleanntan Sonsie Solway Maid - "Fiona" earned her first point.

The Westchester KC show is perhaps one of the few remaining shows that truly provides exhibitors and spectators with a taste of what dog shows were like in the early 1900's. Held on the grounds of the magnificent Lyndhurst Estate, with its gothic revival mansion and sweeping views of the Hudson River, it is not difficult to feel you have gone back in time.

Boz was the single Skye Terrier entry this year. The competition in the groups appeared to be quite strong and the terrier group was certainly filled with quality. The Sealy won the group and went all the way to Best in Show. Group 2 went to a striking Smooth Fox Terrier whose very beautiful breed type really caught my eye.

On the right is an aerial view of Lyndhurst from the cover of the Westchester KC show catalog. Below is a photo of Boz in the group.

September 6 - Labor Day Weekend shows

We were at three shows this past weekend in Raleigh, North Carolina - Durham KC, Salisbury North Carolina KC and Raleigh KC. The three shows attracted a significant number of dog-lovers from the local community who came to learn more about purebred dogs. We set up on a busy isle and introduced the Skye Terrier to many people. Most of these folks were younger folks and young families with not much more than a passing curiosity. But every once in awhile, we will have the pleasure of meeting someone who does know the breed. We always value these opportunities. The more organized "Meet the Breed" and "Kiss the Skye" efforts are important. But, these smaller, more regular interactions with folks who come out to their local dog shows are also important for the breed.

In the show ring, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" made the cut in the group one of the days.

August 26

We were at the Mid Susquehanna Valley Kennel Club shows this weekend. The show is held outdoors at the Middleburg Fireman's Fairgrounds, a very attractive and comfortable site with a terrific show committee. The lunch menu both days is amazing! This is one of a number of summer shows held in this part of Pennsylvania that are very endearing to us.

Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" took Best of Breed both days and a Group 3 on Sunday under judge Dr. H. Scott Kellogg.

Boz's littermate, Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch - "Glinda". was shown on Sunday only and she was skillfully handled by a junior handler in her first outing since earning her championship in April. After attending his first dog show last December, 8-year old Isaac has developed an appreciation for Skye Terriers (see June 30 story below) and an interest in showing. We entered Glinda to give Isaac an opportunity to experience handling a Skye. After an orientation session before ring time, Isaac did a superb job showing Glinda. He received a number of compliments from long-time terrier exhibitors who could not believe that this was his first outing.

INT, DKCH, SCH, KLBCH, LUXCH, JBLV07 Gleanntan Grammy Girl - "Donna"
(Ch. Gleanntan Going For It x Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose)
Born: August 17, 2004
Owned, conditioned and presented by:
Tina Toft Bergstrom, Kennel Skyewalker, Arre, Denmark

Received this note on Saturday afternoon from Tina and Tonny Bergstrom on today's International Show in Denmark: "This weekend The Danish Kennel Club is celebrating its 110th anniversary and therefore they have the biggest two International shows in Denmark with over 3,400 dogs entered both days from all over the world. Today you could win besides the CACIB and CAC also the title Jubilee winner 2007 (JBLV07). DKCH SCH KLBCH LUXCH Gleanntan Grammy Girl - "Donna" went BOB Jubilee winner 07 AND New International Champion! BOS went to Skyewalker's I Speed At Night. Judge was Mr. Harri Lekkonen from Finland. Later on, Donna went BIG 4 under the Danish Judge Mrs. Ingrid Borchorst who is world famous for her Welsh Terrier breeding under the prefix Borchorst."

In the United States, we were at the Penn Ridge Kennel Club show on Saturday and the Harrisburg Kennel Club show on Sunday in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The Skye entry both days consisted of three mature, adult Specials - two dogs and one bitch. We are pleased to report that Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" took Best of Breed on Saturday under judge Mr. Vincent T. Grosso and again on Sunday under judge Mr. W. Terry Stacy.

A third littermate, Gleanntan Goodnessxposed - "Emmee" represented the breed at shows in Greensboro, North Carolina, owner/handled by Shirley Deasy. Though Emmee was single-entered, Shirley reports that Emmee showed well, made new friends for the breed and Shirley received many nice compliments on her girl.

August 5 - Boz takes Best of Breed three days in a row in Canfield, Ohio - Skye Terrier Club of America Supported Entry Shows

Maida, Roxan and I attended the Steel Valley Cluster in Canfield, Ohio - shows supported by the Skye Terrier Club of America. This year, we had just our Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" entered in a field of Skyes that ranged from 9 to 11 each day. I am pleased to report that Boz took Best of Breed at the Fort Steuben Kennel Association show (field of 9 Skyes) under judge Mr. Terry Stacy. The next day, Boz took Best of Breed at the Columbiana County Kennel Club show (field of 10 Skyes) under judge Peter J. Green. The following day, Boz took Best of Breed at the Beaver County Kennel Club show (field of 11 Skyes) under judge Hon. David C. Merriam. Boz also made the cut in the group at the Beaver County show under judge Dr. John C. Shelton. Below are a few photo highlights of Boz from the shows.

July 28 - Summer Days

During the past few weekends, we've had Boz - Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme at shows in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Since Boz was the single Skye entry at these particular shows, he also competed in the terrier group. As is typical of this area of the country, the competition was intense. We made the cut a few times, but did not place in the group. However, we value the group-level competitive experience and the opportunity to have a Skye in the public eye.

July 8

The second pup from Tony and Bea's litter went to his new home today. Maida and I had a delightful visit from our friend, Marijane Parrish who came for her boy "Timmy." Timmy joins Megan who is a 7-year old Gleanntan girl.

Marijane is a most interesting woman, a recently retired teacher, who has owned Skye Terriers for over 45 years. Her first two Skyes were drop-eared Skyes from Mrs. Consuelo V. Earl's Iradell Kennels. She later had Skyes from Betsy Dickenson's Buffalo Skyes, Holly Thomson's MacLean Skyes and more recently from Gleanntan Kennels.

We look forward to hearing about Timmy's new adventures with Marijane and Megan.

July 4 - Lily & Pups Visit Ronald McDonald House

Maida and I enjoy occasionally taking our Skyes to the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, Pennsylvania for pet therapy visits. The Ronald McDonald Houses around the world provide "a home away from home" to families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. It is heartwarming to realize the joy that a Skye Terrier brings to parents, children and house staff at a time when they are coping with the stress of illness.

On Monday, July 2, Maida and I took Lily (Ch. Gleanntan Stargazer Lily) and two of her 10-week old pups to the house. Maida and a group of friends were cooking a meal for about 30 house guests. Following dinner, I brought in the three Skyes. As usual, the house was quite busy, with full occupancy, and the arrival of the Skyes created quite a bit of curiosity. Lily and kids greeted guests and staff alike in the front hall. The pups then made the rounds as they were carried from the living room to the TV room and then back to the front hall. They rode in the lap of one of our friends as he gave a tour in his electric wheelchair. Lily was a terrific ambassador for the breed as she gave gentle kisses and was happy to settle in to be petted. Lily's pups were "little angels" - truly Therapy Skyes in Training. While the pups were allowed to explore the front hall area, they mostly traveled around in the arms of guests and staff. What could be better therapy than gentle Skye puppy kisses? And for the Skyes, how wonderful to meet so many new friends.

June 30 - We Love Skyes!!

Today we had a wonderful visit with friends featuring an afternoon of playing with puppies. We started out on the deck where 8-year old Mackenzie and 7-year old Isaac had a chance to first meet the 9-week old Lily pups who were the greeting committee. Next we brought out the 10-week old Bea pups. After a bit of playtime, we took the pups indoors. A brief orientation was given on how to properly pick up a Skye and the remainder of the afternoon was spent picking up and cuddling puppies. Isaac noted that the pups sired by Tony shared his intense love of kissing (see below). The little girl from Lily's litter spent much of her time riding around in Mackenzie's arms or on her hip - I don't think this pup's feet touched the ground much. We did take a brief time out for delicious ice cream cake, brought by our guests,  with a personalized and most appropriate inscription (see below). After a couple of hours, the pups were completely worn out and they promptly fell sound asleep. Some placed their heads on large stuffed toys. Some lay flat on their backs. They were exhausted! It was a fun afternoon and a great socialization experience for the pups.

June 24 - Virginia Terrier Club & Virginia Kennel Club

Maida and I have just returned from three days of shows in Richmond, Virginia. We shared the three days with our friend, Shirley Deasy who drove up from North Carolina. On Friday was the 6th Annual Virginia Terrier Club group show. The Skye is one of 11 terriers included in the club's logo and we were pleased to have the breed represented at this show. Our Special dog, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" earned a Group 3 under breeder/judge Sandra Goose Allen, Windflower, in an entry of 252 terriers. BIS went to the Staffie Bull, Ch. Bullseye American Idol, handled by Kimberly Rudzik. The Virginia Kennel Club all-breed shows were held on Saturday and Sunday at the same site. On Sunday, Boz took a Group 4 under judge Mr. Robert S. Forsyth in an entry of 202 terriers. Boz's littermate, Gleanntan Goodnessxposed - "Emmee" was shown the three days and she was in superb condition and was presented well.

May 29 - Memorial Day Weekend - Three Shows - Three Group Placements

Maida and I were at three of the Memorial Day Weekend shows in New Castle, Pennsylvania on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Below is a daily report followed by a few photos.

Monday's New Castle Kennel Club show had a Skye entry of 1-2-2-0 with the class dog absent and the other male Special absent. Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" earned Best of Breed under judge Dr. Miguel Umana and on to a Group 3 under judge Keke Kahn. The Group 1 winner was Margery Good's Sealy and the Group 2 winner was the Airedale. It was gratifying to have our Skye recognized in this level of competition all three days. The Sealy went all the way to Best in Show on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday. He is currently the #1 terrier and #6 all breeds in the United States. The Airedale bitch possesses excellent breed type and she was Best of Breed at this year's prestigious Crufts show in England.

Sunday's Trumbull County Kennel Club show had a Skye entry of 1-2-2-0 with the other male Special absent. Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" earned Best of Breed under judge Mr. Kenneth Edh from Sweden. Boz went on to a Group 3 under judge Dr. Miguel Umana from Colombia, South America. The end of the group judging featured a bit of drama, with a strong thunderstorm passing through as the judging came to an end. The skies were getting darker and more threatening as the judging progressed. Just as the judge was about to make his final selections, the storm came through with gusty winds and rain. Group 1 went to the Sealy and Group 2 went to the Airedale bitch. This show had a supported entry for Scotties and Kerries so the overall terrier entry was 144.

Saturday's Butler County Kennel Club show had a Skye entry of 1-2-2-0 with the class dog absent and the other male Special absent. Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" took Best of Breed and a Group 4 under judge John T. (Tom) Ward. The show included regional specialties for Kerry Blue Terriers and Scottish Terriers, making a strong overall terrier entry.

Sunday - Boz waits his turn while Dr. Umana takes a close look at Michael Kemp's Lakeland

Sunday - Boz on the down and back

Monday - Working hard at the end - the Sealy (left) was Group 1 and the Skye was Group 3

May 19 - Boz - Group 3 - Mattaponi Kennel Club

We returned to the show ring this weekend after a one-month hiatus that we took for the whelping of our puppies.

Today, Maida and I were at the Mattaponi Kennel Club show in Manassas, Virginia. We had Boz - Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme entered. Boz earned a Group 3 placement under judge Ms. Gay H. Dunlap. Boz was the first to make the cut in an excellent group of terriers. She then put up Margery Good's excellent Sealy to Group 1. Group 2 went to a striking Norwich, handled by Andrew Green. This show was a supported entry show for Norwich and Norfolks.

The total terrier entry was 152 which is solid for a medium-sized all-breed show.

April 28 - Puppy Update

Our litter from Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea", sired by Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony" is now at Day 11 and the pups continue to thrive and gain weight.

Our litter from Ch. Gleanntan Stargazer Lily - "Lily", sired by Ch. Gleanntan Getouttadodge - "David" is now three - 2 dogs and 1 bitch. Despite our best efforts and the excellent assistance of our vet, two of Lily's male pups passed on Day 2 and Day 4.

April 24 - A second Gleanntan litter is born

Our much loved Lily - Ch. Gleannntan Stargazer Lily gave birth to five puppies (4 dogs, 1 bitch)  today. The sire is Ch. Gleanntan Getouttadodge - "David". The joy of every Skye litter born here is that the pups enter the world with new hopes and dreams. Their most important role in life will be to bring joy to their owners. Some will carry on the Gleanntan family of Skyes.

April 22 - Potomac Skye Terrier Club Specialty Weekend Highlights

We've just returned from the Potomac Skye Terrier Club Specialty; Old Dominion Kennel Club and Baltimore County Kennel Club shows in Timonium, Maryland. The Potomac Specialty was held on Friday in the Exhibition Hall of the Maryland State Fairgrounds. The Specialty was held in conjunction with the Columbia Terrier Association of Maryland Terrier Group show. This year, we were at a new venue at the State Fairgrounds. The site was absolutely perfect with easy access, plenty of grooming space, large rings and perfect lighting. Hats off to the Columbia Terrier Association of Maryland for securing this impressive new venue.

The Potomac Specialty entry was 2 class dogs, 7 class bitches, 2 male Specials and 1 bitch Special, plus 1 Veteran bitch with 3 absent. The judge this year was Mr. Michael Dougherty from California. Our entry drew from as far away as California, as well as from upstate New York, Western and Central Pennsylvania and North Carolina. We are proud to report that Best of Breed went to our young Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz", breeder/owner handled by Michael Pesare.

Winners Bitch and Best of Winners (4-point major) went to Boz's littermate, Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch - "Glinda", skillfully handled by Travis S. Wright. Travis has owned Skyes since 1994 but, prior to this weekend, he had just a handful of "in the ring" experiences with the breed. We were delighted to give Travis the opportunity to work with our beloved Glinda. Travis handled Glinda with poise and skill and they were a joy to watch in the ring together.

Reserve Winners Bitch went to Gleanntan Goodnessxposed - "Emmee" who is the littermate of both Boz and Glinda. Emmee is owned and loved by Shirley S. Deasy. Shirley is also new to the conformation ring but has a wealth of experience in obedience and in a variety of performance events. Shirley has done an outstanding job with Emmee. We were proud to see Emmee and Glinda moving around the ring together.

Later that day, Boz represented the breed in the terrier group and he made the cut under group judge Peter Green. The group/BIS winner was the Scottie handled by Gabriel Rangel.

To truly make the weekend a "breeder's dream weekend" we also had wonderful success the following two days at the Old Dominion Kennel Club and Baltimore County Kennel Club shows.

The Old Dominion Kennel Club's total Skye entry was 1-5-3-0 with 1 absent. Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" took Best of Breed under judge Mr. Larry Adams. Later that day, Boz made the cut with judge Mrs. Dawn Hansen selecting about 6 terriers from which she selected her final four placements. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch - "Glinda" earned Winners Bitch for a 4-point major.

Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" following his Best of Breed win at the Baltimore County Kennel Club show. Boz's gentle temperament makes him a fine ambassador for the breed.

The Baltimore County Kennel Club's total Skye entry was 1-4-3-0 with 1 absent. Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" took Best of Breed under judge Mr. Peter J. Green. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch - "Glinda" earned Winners Bitch for a 3-point major to complete her AKC Championship. See Glinda's page for more information on her.

To cap off the weekend, Boz earned a Terrier Group 2 under judge Mr. D. Roy Holloway with Group 1 going to Margery Good's outstanding Sealy who was Best in Show the day before (and the Sealy took Best in Show again on Sunday). The total terrier entry this day was 390.

Our special thanks to Roxan Rohrich and Pat and Emily Simpson for their superb care of Bea and her pups while we were gone for three days.

April 17 - A new generation of Gleanntan Skyes

Today our Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea" gave birth to 5 bitches and 4 dogs. Proud father is Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony".

April 8 - Easter Sunday - Winter?? Show

Maida and I have just returned from the Chesapeake Kennel Club show in Prince Frederick, Maryland where we showed our Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz". We look forward to this show as it is traditionally the first outdoor show of our season. However, in recent years, the show has proven that Winter can maintain a stubborn grip on the weather. With temperatures in the high 30's and low 40's and a cold, gusty wind, this was not exactly the optimal day to be out showing a fully coated Skye Terrier! I am pleased to report that in the group competition, Boz earned a Group 2 under judge John T. Ward.

Also this weekend, Boz's littermate, "Emmee" - Gleanntan Goodnessxposed was shown at the Piedmont Kennel Club show in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although she was single-entered, we received good reports from Emmee's proud mom and handler, Shirley Deasy.

The photo of Boz's group win on the Tar Heel Circuit has been posted below:

April 1 - Gleanntan Littermates Win in Luxembourg and in Pittsburgh, PA

Maida and I and our friend Travis Wright were at two shows in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this past weekend. We have been coming to the Western Pennsylvania Kennel Association shows for a number of years now and they always make for an enjoyable show weekend. These shows are held at the convention center in the city and always attract an enthusiastic spectator crowd of dog lovers. This year, we had two of our Skyes representing the Gleanntan program - our Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" who we co-own with Travis and our Open bitch, Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch - "Glinda". The total Skye entry was 0-3-2-0. I was very pleased with the way both dogs showed both days and am pleased to report that Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme took Best of Breed on Saturday under judge Robert J. Moore from Georgia. Boz was breeder/owner handled by me (Michael). Glinda was very capably presented by Travis in their first outing together. Glinda was Reserve Winners Bitch on Saturday. It was a fun weekend of talking dogs with friends.

Glinda on the move with Travis

Boz on the move

We also received more exciting news from our friend Tina in Denmark: "Once again I'm happy to announce another title for Donna (DKCH SCH KLBCH LUXCH Gleanntan Grammy Girl). Yesterday, on the 31st of March, we participated in an International Dog Show in Luxembourg with over 4,000 entries. This show draws big attention with lots of competitors from Europe. I'm please to announce that Donna went BOS and won CAC and CACIB and went new Luxembourg Champion. LUXCH. BOB went to Skyewalker's I Have A Dream, a son of DJ (Int. Gleanntan Grand Musicmaker). Judge was Mr. Fransesco Cochetti from Italy.

March 26 - Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" Group 1 on the Tar Heel Circuit

Maida and I were in Raleigh, North Carolina for the final three days of the Tar Heel Circuit. These shows run from Tuesday through Sunday and are held at the spacious North Carolina State Fairgrounds. We had a wonderful visit with our friends the Lindseys (Joe, Ginger and Gina) and Shirley and Neil Deasy. We also shared three fun days at the shows. Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - Boz and his sister, Gleanntan Goodnessxposed - Emmee were entered Friday through Sunday. On the final day, at the Fayetteville Kennel Club, Boz earned a Group 1 under judge Mrs. Sue Weiss in an entry of 222 terriers. The terrier competition was intense with a number of multiple Best in Show winning terriers in the field. The Best in Show lineup was quite an experience with the beautiful Westminster group winning Akita; the Westminster group winning Toy Poodle; Jim Moses and his Shepherd; and the previous day's Best in Show winner, the 15" Beagle catching my eye. Below are a few photos from the weekend.

March 26 - More Exciting News From Denmark

News from our friend, Tina Toft Bergstrom, Kennel Skyewalker, Denmark: "This weekend we had 2 Terrier Club Shows with 400 entries. On Saturday Gleanntan Grammy Girl won Best of Breed and also her last Club CAC which gave her a new title, namely KLBCH (Club Champion). Best of Opposite Sex went to the son of DJ (Int. Ch. Gleanntan Grand Musicmaker) Skyewalker's I Have A Dream, who won his last CAC and therefore went New Danish Champion. This is the fastest win of a Danish Championship in Denmark. Judge was Maija Mäkinen from Finland. Donna's titles are now DKCH, SCH and KLBCH. The day after we had the very well known and highly respected judge from Great Britain, Mr. Frank Jones. BOB went to Skyewalker's I Have A Dream and BOS went to Gleanntan Grammy Girl. In Best in Show we had the well known Mrs. L. Coleman Hutchinson USA. For the first time ever in Denmark, the Best in Show went to a Skye Terrier, namely the son of DJ Skyewalker's I Have A Dream."

March 18 - DKCH Gleanntan Grammy Girl earns her Swedish Championship

News from Tina Toft Bergstrom, Kennel Skyewalker, Denmark: I'm happy to announce that yesterday at an International Show in Malmo in Sweden with over 4,000 entries, Gleanntan Grammy Girl - Donna (Ch. Gleanntan Going For It x Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose) went BOS and won CACIB and also her Swedish Champion title! BOB went to Skyewalker's I Have A Dream (a son of Multi Ch. Gracie has completed more than 50 visits to nursing homes/assisted living facilities in Northern New Jersey. Her "sister" Coco (Brenmoor Beguileratgleanntan, CGC) is also well on her way to getting her title as well." Congratulations Sue, Gracie and Coco!

March 10

Today we are reflecting back on the Saturday morning six years ago that Maida and I received the call that our dear friend and mentor, Donna Dale, had passed away. With the passage of time, the numbing pain of her loss has subsided. However, her memory remains alive in our hearts and we take comfort when we look at her Skye, Emily (right) and Emily's offspring, including her "carbon copy" daughter, Glinda (left). We are proud to carry on her life's work.

March 5 - Emily Participates in Read Across America

On Thursday, March 1, Gleanntan's beloved ten-year old veteran good-will ambassador, Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose - "Emily" once again participated in the National Read Across America program. Now retired from the show ring, Emily has been enjoying her new career as an exceptional ambassador for the Skye Terrier. Emily and I were invited back to a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area school where we read to two groups of 1st and 2nd graders - about 70 in total. I once again selected the Greyfriars Bobby novel, though this year I selected passages from Lavinia Derwent's "The Tale of Greyfriars Bobby". As one might expect, the children were mesmerized by Emily. A few of the children remembered her from last year's visit.

Before reading from the Greyfriar's Bobby book, I related to the children how reading can be such a powerful force in our lives by broadening our awareness of people, places, events and even animals that we might not otherwise have a chance to know. I described how our purchase of a little paperback novel nearly 20 years ago made us aware of the Skye Terrier and how it resulted in what has become a rewarding hobby.

One of the highlights of our visit occurred while I was reading a passage describing Bobby's loyalty to his owner, Auld Jock. As I held Emily's lead I could feel her pulling a bit and a group of children giggling. I looked down to find Emily very gently crawling into the lap of one of the children sitting in the front row. At the conclusion of the reading, each child was given a color Greyfriars Bobby postcard that I created with photos and information about the breed, the Greyfrairs Bobby novel and the Disney movie.

March 4

This past weekend, Maida and I were at the Monticello New York Kennel Club and the Kennel Club of Northern New Jersey shows with our Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz". The entry both days was 0-0-2-0 - not a large entry of Skyes but at least there were two mature, fully coated, male specials for the judges to compare. The judge on Saturday was Peter J. Green breed/group and on Sunday it was Anne Katona in breed and Maxine Beam in group. We are pleased to report that Boz took Best of Breed both days and made the cut in the group both days.

February 20 - Midas earns his Canine Good Citizen title

We are proud to report that on February 20, Midas - Ch. Gleanntan Pot Of Gold earned his Canine Good Citizen title. Congratulations to owners Ginger and Joe Lindsey!

February 4

Maida and I have just returned from the two Boardwalk Kennel Club shows in the seaside town of Wildwood, New Jersey. For one reason or another, we have never entered these shows before and we were very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the show site. Wildwood, New Jersey is one of a number of seaside tourist communities on what is collectively known as the Jersey Shore. This town has a definite 1950's flair as many of the resort hotels were constructed during this era. Wildwood is where Bill Haley & The Comets first performed "(We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock" in April, 1954. It is also the birthplace of "The Twist." It might be worth noting here that neither Maida nor I were present during the 1950's and we are more enamored with the music of a later period. But, it is fun history nonetheless!

We had a nice opportunity to visit with our friend, Rosemary Hodgins who lives in Cape May, just south of Wildwood. Rosemary owns two Gleanntan Skyes, Ch. Gleanntan Gottahavitall - "Mitchell" and Ch. Gleanntan Goodness Triumphs - "Daisy".

The Boardwalk KC shows are held at the Wildwood Convention Center, located right on the beach. In fact, one entire wall of the building is glass, providing a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean. Image being in the ring with this view as your backdrop.

We had our Special, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" entered and he showed beautifully both days. As is often the case in the Middle Atlantic region, the terrier group was filled with quality and the judges had many options. We are delighted that our youngster made the cut both days.

January 7 - AKC Championship for Boz at the Rubber City KC shows in Ohio

Maida, Roxan and I were at the two Rubber City Kennel Club shows at the Summit County Fairgrounds in Tallmadge, OH this past weekend. Our single entry was our Bred by Exhibitor dog, Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz". The Skye entry both days was 4 class dogs, 2 class bitches, 1 dog Special and 1 bitch Special (4-2-1-1).

As a class entry, Boz has been on a roll at the end of 2006, with four group placements in just over a month in end of year group competition. We entered these shows as they have historically attracted a Skye entry. We wanted to place Boz in competition where he would have an opportunity to obtain points towards his championship.

On Saturday, January 6, under judge Dr. John A. Reeve-Newson, Boz took BEST OF BREED from the Bred by class over the two Specials to earn a 4-point major. On this day there was one class male absent. Boz went on to earn a Group 2 placement under Skye Terrier breeder/judge, Dr. Richard Meen, Kishniga.

On Sunday, January 7, under judge Dr. Richard Meen, Boz again took BEST OF BREED from the Bred by Exhibitor class for 2 points. On this day, one class male and the two Specials were absent. With this win, Boz obtained his AKC championship.

Boz is owned by Travis Wright and Gleanntan.
