December 15 - Holiday Read-to-a-Dog Library Event

On Monday, December 14, 2009, Maida and I participated in a very special Holiday Read to a Dog event at the Arendtsville (Pennsylvania) Library. Maida and I regularly seek out opportunities to have our Skyes participate in public education events. This opportunity to give back to our community during the holiday season was magical.

Our friend, Suzanne, who breeds Collies, started the local Read-to-a-Dog Program a few years ago and, in 2008 she received an AKC Community Achievement Award for her work. This year, Suzanne invited us to join her with our Skyes.

Maida and I typically prepare for visits with children by discussing the event and assessing which Skye or Skyes in our "family" of Skyes would be the best fit. We extensively socialize all of our Skyes from the time they are born and we are proud of the fact that we have a number of Skyes that are well suited to visits with young children. One of our true "pet therapy stars" is Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz". Boz started visiting the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, PA when he was a young pup and he has participated in a wide range of public events. We decided to bring Boz as our main Skye representative. We also brought two of our 12-week old Tony x Glinda pups, "Tara" (Green Girl) and "Harry" (Dark Blue Boy) on the first outing of their young lives.

Although we live about two hours from Washington, DC and Baltimore, our area is very rural. According to the last census, the total population of Arendtsville is 891 and Aspers' population is 324 people (plus a few Skye Terriers). These two communities are located in a major apple growing region with over 5 million bushels of apples harvested each year. Our local historical society provides the following description: "Scotch-Irish settlers established farms in the Biglerville area before 1740, followed later by German families which stimulated agriculture practices. Railroads accelerated fresh fruit shipping after 1880, fruit processing after 1900. Today the area is one of the most intensive fruit regions in the country with nationally known processors and a variety of support industries."

Today, an integral part of the apple harvest is supported by a migrant community. Many of the workers are seasonal but there is also a year round community. We knew that many of our attendees would be children with English as a second language and planned our presentation to reach out to them as much as possible.

We arrived about 30 minutes early and allowed the dogs to exercise before going up to the second floor of the historic building that houses the library and community center. When we entered the second floor library room, we were greeted by the head librarian who enthusiastically thanked us for coming. He cautioned us to keep our turnout expectations in check. Sadly, funding for this particular library has been cut and the library area of this community building will be closing its doors in two weeks.

As the start time approached, children and their parents began to arrive. Suzanne arranged to have a wonderful interpreter in attendance. Jorge did a fantastic job making the families feel comfortable and in helping to overcome any possible barriers with the languages.

By the time we started, there were about 20 children in the audience and quite a few parents. Boz lay comfortably on the floor, allowing the children to come up and pet him. The pups were more energetic and curious as they busily visited with any child who got their attention.

Our presentation commenced with a brief description of the two Scottish breeds. I described how Skyes were originally bred to rid the farm of vermine like the groundhogs that inhabit the areas apple orchards. Suzanne described how Collies were used to heard the sheep on the farm. I described how the Greyfriars Bobby novel first introduced us to the Skye Terrier. Suzanne described how, as a child, she read Albert Payson Terhune's classic Lad: A Dog over and over again as she dreamed about eventually getting a Collie.

Suzanne then invited one of the children to read aloud from one of her books on dogs. This was followed by my readings passages of Skippy the Skye Terrier while showing the beautiful color Marguerite Kirmse illustrations. Our presentation repeatedly emphasized the importance of books and reading. As one might expect, the children were more receptive to our message because of the lure and charm of the Skyes and Collies.

After the presentation was finished, the children were given gift bags that included a number of Skye goodies. Maida created color Skye postcards and we also included a copy of the small breed information card that the Potomac Skye Terrier Club created. The children were also invited to take one children's book that had been privately donated.

A few of the children had been watching me pick up the pups in the beginning of our visit and asked if they could hold a pup. I gave them instructions on how to hold a Skye from the front and the back so that their full body is supported. We all enjoyed the moment.

After about two hours it was time to leave. We departed the Arendtsville Library filled with Christmas spirit. I expect that we will be repeating this program again at a local library early in the new year.

December 13 - Crown Classic Dog Shows - Cleveland

Maida and I were in Cleveland, Ohio this past weekend for the Crown Classic Dog Shows. On Saturday at the Richland County KC show the Skye entry was 3-2-2-0. We had one dog entered Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" in the Bred by Exhibitor class. I am pleased to say that 15-month old Gus took Winners Dog and Best of Winners. The judge was Richard Bauer.

Sunday was the Western Reserve KC show and the judge was Dr. Richard Meen, Kishniga Skyes. The Skye entry again was 3-2-2-0. Gus repeated his Winners Dog win.

It was an enjoyable weekend and a nice opportunity to visit with friends. We are pleased that Gus earned two more points towards his championship and now just needs two single points for his title. But, most importantly, the weekend gave us a chance to benchmark this young Skye's maturation and progress. We are pleased with how he is coming along and look forward to his finishing his title in 2010.

December 5

Maida and I were at the Chambersburg Area Kennel Club show yesterday. This show in held in Gettysburg, PA so it is about as close to home as one can get. The Skye entry was small (0-1-1-0) and consisted of Ch. Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick" and Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie". Mick took BOB and Elphie took BOS under judge Mr. Alfred Ferruggiaro.

November 24

Maida and I were at the Chesapeake Kennel Club of Maryland and the Upper Marlboro KC shows this past weekend. The shows were held at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship, Maryland. We haven't been entered in these shows since 2007 and it was nice to return this year.

The Skye entry was small (0-1-1-0) and consisted of Ch. Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick" and Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie". Mick took BOB and Elphie was BOS on Saturday under judge Mr. Vincent Grosso and BOB and Elphie was BOS on Sunday under judge Mrs. Kathleen Grosso.

November 18 - 2010 Westminster KC Invitation for Ch. Gleanntan Comeflywithme!

The Westminster Kennel Club has just announced the invitees to next February’s show in New York City. The invitation list is comprised of the top five dogs in each breed calculated by the number of dogs defeated in their respective breeds through the month of October. We are indeed honored that our young male, Ch. Gleanntan Comeflywithme! – “Mick”, qualified for Westminster having competed in just 11 shows through October. “Mick” earned Best of Breed from the Bred by Exhibitor class in all 11 shows and he completed his AKC championship in September. Mick is owned by Lynn and Gary Wolf of Slidell, Louisiana and co-owned by Gleanntan.

November 14

Today, we took another series of photos of Tony x Glinda's pups, now 8 weeks of age.

November 8 - Furniture City KC - 2009

Maida and I were at the Furniture City Kennel Club shows this past weekend. The shows were held at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex in Greensboro, North Carolina. We have attended these shows over the past few years as they provide a nice opportunity to visit with friends in the area.

This year, the Skye entry was small (0-1-1-0) and consisted of Ch. Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick" and Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie". Mick took BOB on Saturday under judge Ms. Charlotte Clem McGowan and BOB on Sunday under judge Ms. Barbara Keenan. Elphie showed well and was BOS both days. I was pleased with the way Mick showed in the group.

We enjoyed visiting with friends and their Gleanntan Skyes - Shirley Deasy and her Skye "Emmee"; Ginger Lindsey and "Cookie"; and Gina and Bill Bump and their Skye "Sadie". We also had a nice visit with our niece Jessica and her husband Ted.

October 25

We were at the Middleburg KC shows on Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25. Ch. Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick" was entered in BOB and Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie"  was entered in the Bred by Exhibitor class. Also entered was Gleanntan Laughter Through Tears - "Truvy" who is owned and handled by Travis Wright. On Saturday, Mick earned BOB and Truvy earned WB/BOS. On Sunday, Mick earned BOB again and Elphie earned WB/BOS.

On Sunday, we were able to get new photos of Bailey, Gus, Elphie and Truvy.

October 3 - Updates from the STCA National Specialty Weekend

On Friday, at the Hatboro Dog Club II show, Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" earned Reserve Winners Dog from the 12-18 month old class.

On Saturday, at the Devon Dog Club show, Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" again earned Reserve Winners Dog from the 12-18 month old class.

October 1

On Thursday, at the Hatboro Dog Club I - Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee! (Ch. Gleanntan Going For It x Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose) took BEST OF BREED in a field of 23 Skye Terriers under judge Sally George. This was my first opportunity to handle Bea in just over three years! In the past three years, Bea has been shown in a total of 6 shows - last year's Montgomery Weekend, where she was handled by Travis Wright (she earned an Award of Merit at the STCA National Specialty '08); this year's Westminster Kennel Club show where she was Best of Opposite Sex - also handled by Travis; and this year's Potomac Skye Terrier Club Specialty where she was handled by a junior handler friend.

September 27 - Warrenton KC and Old Dominion KC shows

On Saturday, I was at the Warrenton Kennel Club show at the Historic Long Branch Farm in Millwood, Virginia. The total Skye entry was 2-2-0-0. The two Gleanntan representatives were Mick and Elphie. Ch. Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick" was entered in the Bred by class but moved up as a result of completing his championship a couple of weeks ago. One-year old Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie" was entered in the Bred by Exhibitor bitch class. Mick earned Best of Breed and also he made the cut in the terrier group. Elphie took Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex for a point.

On Sunday, the show was the Old Dominion KC show at the same site. The total entry on this day was 2-3-1-0. In addition to Mick and Elphie, our friend Travis Wright was entered with Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper" and Gleanntan Laughter Through Tears - "Truvy". The remaining Skyes in the entry were from another breeder. Today, Best of Breed again went to our the Bred by dog who was moved up Ch. Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick". Mick is owned by Lynn and Gary Wolf and co-owned by Gleanntan. Winners Bitch/Best of Opposite Sex for two points again went to the Bred by bitch, Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie".

September 14

September 13

Maida and I were at the Berks County KC show in Kutztown, PA. We had just one Skye entered - Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" in the Bred by Exhibitor class. Gus was the only Skye so he returned later in the day for the group. Given the fact that Gus is just 11.5 months old, we had modest expectations. It was quite a thrill to have Gus pulled for the final lineup of 6 or 7 terriers - particularly given the fact that the lineup included the #1 Airedale, Cairn, Bedlington and Kerry Blue terriers.

September 6 - Celebrating a New Gleanntan Champion - Ch. Gleanntan Comeflywithme!

Maida and I were at the Altoona Area Kennel Association shows on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6 with one class dog, Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick", entered in the Bred by Exhibitor class.

On Saturday, the judge was Mr. Kenneth Kauffman and the entry was 2 class dogs, 2 class bitches and 2 male Specials. Mick earned Best of Breed from the Bred by Exhibitor class over the two male Specials thereby earning his all-important second 3-point major. Later that day, Mick went on to earn a Terrier Group 4.

On Sunday, the entry was 2 class dogs and one male Special under judge Mr. Dennis J. Kniola. Mick repeated his Best of Breed win from the Bred by Exhibitor class over the Special for the final points for his championship. Mick also repeated with another Group 4 placement.

Mick is owned by Lynn and Gary Wolf and co-owned by Gleanntan.

Mick is the 5th champion sired by our Finnish import, Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony" who was bred by Thea and Rolf Dahlbom. Mick is also the 5th champion out of our homebred Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!

August 31 - Gettysburg College's Dog Days 2009

This evening, Maida and I attended the first evening of Gettysburg College's "Dog Days" with three of our Skyes. "Dog Days" is designed to use pets to help welcome students to Gettysburg College. During the first three weeks of classes, college employees are encouraged to bring their dogs to campus for "Dog Days." Students are invited to meet the dogs and their owners. "If you get to know the dog, you can get to know the person," said Kathy Bradley, Director of the Health & Counseling Center and Associate Dean of College Life, who dreamed up Dog Days. "If a student has one connection on campus - from a custodian to the president - we're more likely to retain that student. And it addresses students' homesickness and well-being."

Last year, we participated with our Skyes for the first time and the experience was outstanding for the dogs and great fun for us. The "caterpillar dogs" were a big hit with the students and we often stayed well beyond the designated time for each visit. At the request of the students, we also returned for a number of weeks after "Dog Days" officially ended.

This evening, we attended with Boz (Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme), Mackenzie (Ch. Gleanntan Glorious Legacy) and Elphie (Gleanntan Defying Gravity). Quite a few of the students from last year returned to see the dogs. In addition, a number of new freshman students (and sophomores, junior and seniors) also participated for the first time. The advertised time was from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. However, the students so enjoyed visiting with Boz, Mackenzie and Elphie that we stayed an additional hour. At one point, a large group of students sat in a circle and visited with the Skyes. Often the Skyes were lying so quietly for their belly rubs that it was hard to tell if they were awake. One student quickly grabbed his cell phone, took a photo of Boz and then sent the photo to his mother at home. He then called her on his phone and said, "We are here at "Dog Days" visiting with the neatest dogs. They are Skye Terriers. Did you get the e-mailed photo?"

August 16 - Talbot KC

Maida and I had two of our Skyes entered in the Talbot Kennel Club show in Easton, Maryland today. The total Skye entry was 1-3-0-0 with one absent. It was a hot day with temps in the mid-90s. Occasionally a breeze would come up to cool things a bit but it was quite humid. We enjoyed visiting with our Skye friends and their lovely two Skyes. In the breed ring, we were proud of Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - Mick's showing as he took Winners Dog/Best of Winners/Best of Breed (1 point). At age two, he is coming into his own. Mick is owned by Lynn and Gary Wolf and Gleanntan. Our 11-month old Gleanntan Defying Gravity - Elphie took Winners Bitch/Best of Opposite Sex from the BBE class (1 point).

August 9 - Harrisburg Shows

Maida and I were at the Penn Ridge KC show on Saturday and the Harrisburg KC show on Sunday. We entered only our 11-month old male puppy Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" primarily to give him another opportunity for some ring experience. Gus has both of his majors and a total of 11 points and I'd prefer to have him mature on his way to his title. Gus showed with joy and poise and I could not have asked for more from this happy youngster. On Saturday, there was a Puppy Group competition and Gus took a Group 3 behind a beautiful and quite promising Soft Coated Wheaten bred and owned by a friend of ours. The weekend was most enjoyable. We had great fun watching some of the judging and catching up with friends.

August 3 - Summertime Photos

July 26 - American Kennel Club/Dog Judges Association of America Advanced Terrier Institute

On Friday, July 18 Maida and I flew to Houston, Texas for the AKC/DJAA Advanced Terrier Institute. STCA Judges Education Chair, Sandra Goose Allen and I were invited to present the Skye Terrier judges education curriculum to prospective judges. The Institute was being held at Reliant Center in conjunction a large four-day cluster of shows. Maida and I arrived in Houston at about mid-day on Friday and headed to the Houston Zoo for the afternoon. The presentation on Saturday was scheduled for the afternoon so we went over to the Reliant Center the following morning and took in some of the show, including the Skye judging. The session was divided into classroom time followed by hands-on with live Skyes. The following morning, before departing for the airport, I attended Cathy Nelson's excellent presentation on Dandie Dinmont Terriers. I was familiar with the curriculum as Cathy and I co-presented on the Dandie and the Skye in NYC a few years ago. Given the fact that the Dandie is another achonodroplastic (dwarf) terrier, there is always something to learn from her presentation.

July 5

A couple of weeks ago we had just 9-month old Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" entered in the Mountaineer KC and South Hills KC shows from Friday through Sunday. Gus was the single Skye entry so this was primarily an opportunity for ring experience.

Now getting our schedule together for the balance of the summer and going into the Montgomery Weekend in October.

June 13 - A Tradition Continues...

Once upon a time there were two friends, Emily (Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose) the Skye and Java the Borzoi who LOVED sitting together on this couch. In time, Java left for heaven and Emily welcomed a new Borzoi pal Posh, onto her couch, until one day, she too left for heaven. Now, Posh has encouraged Emily's granddaughter Elphie (Gleanntan Defying Gravity) onto this special couch for friendship and playtime. How great is that? (written by Maida)

June 11

Here is one more photo from our weekend in Virginia. On Sunday, our dear friend, Jo Ann Lyons, took her new girl home. Jo Ann reports that Gleanntan Gift From Auntie Em - "Mia" is adjusting well and enjoying her new Skye friend, Delphi. Jo Ann also noted that Mia is eating well and after dinner, Mia likes to rest on down pillows.

June 9 - Tony x Glinda photos added to their page

I added the new photos of the Tony x Glinda pups (shown below) to the the puppy page. This provides an instructive photo progression of the four pups from 7 weeks of age to 8.5 months of age.

June 7 - Shows, new photos and Duffy's CD title

Maida and I were at the Skyline Kennel Club show in Fishersville, VA on Saturday (6/6) and the Shenandoah Valley Kennel Club show in Harrisonburg, VA on Sunday (6/7). We had two Skyes entered - Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick" in the Bred by Exhibitor class and Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie". Also entered was Elphie's littermate, Gleanntan Laughter Through Tears - "Truvy" owned by Travis Wright. Truvy and Elphie were entered in the Puppy class. The total entry was 1-2-0-0. Mick earned Winners Dog/Best of Winners/Best of Breed both days and Truvy earned Winners Bitch/Best of Opposite Sex both days. Also, on Sunday, Truvy competed in the Terrier Puppy Group and earned a Group 3. It was a most enjoyable weekend of shows in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The weather at this time of year can be very humid, but this weekend was perfect with low humidity and beautiful clear vistas of the mountains.

Yesterday, we took new photos of the four Tony x Glinda puppies, now just over 8.5 months of age.

Also this weekend, in Delaware, Judy Fatzinger was competing in the obedience ring with her Skye Ch. Gleanntan Going For The Silver - "Duffy" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!). Duffy earned a qualifying score on Saturday and achieved his Companion Dog obedience title. Judy and Duffy started working in obedience after Duffy completed his AKC championship one year ago. Big congratulations to Judy and Duffy on their accomplishment!

May 21 - New Pages Added

New pages have been created for recent AKC Champions Bailey and Mackenzie. I've also added pages for Mick, Gus and Truvy who are working towards their championships. Some of the pages have new photos as well.

May 18 - Photo - Gleanntan Laughter Through Tears - "Truvy"

This photo of "Truvy" was taken last month at the Potomac Skye Terrier Club Specialty. The photo was taken at the same time as the professional photographer was taking his photo. Unfortunately, "Truvy's owner/handler, Travis Wright, was cropped but I like the photo so I have posted it here.

May 17 - New Photo - Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus"

May 17 - Mattaponi KC - Gus - back-to-back 4-point majors and Bailey earns her AKC Championship

Maida and I were entered in the two Mattaponi Kennel Club shows this past weekend in Manassas, Virginia. At the Saturday show, our 8-month old puppy, Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" took Winners Dog/Best of Winners/Best of Breed from the 6 to 9 month puppy class in a field of 6 Skyes for a 4-point major. The judge was Mr. Kenneth Kauffman. On Sunday, Gus repeated this win for second 4-point major under judge Mr. James Reynolds.

Also on Sunday, Gleanntan Gale's Grace - "Bailey" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!) earned Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex for a 4-point major to complete her AKC Championship. Bailey is owned and adored by Kate Kozeliski. Bailey was handled to all of her points by Kate. We are very proud of Kate and Bailey for this outstanding accomplishment.

May 11 - New photo of Gus

May 10 - Chester Valley Kennel Club & Lancaster Kennel Club Shows

Maida and I were entered in two shows this past weekend with two-year old Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick" and 7.5-month old Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie". The Skye entry both days was 2-2-0-0 (two of our breeding and two not bred/owned by us). At the Chester Valley KC show on Saturday Mick showed nicely and took Winners Dog/Best of Winners/Best of Breed. This was Mick's first show in seven months. Elphie showed with poise, particularly given the fact that the grass was thick and a bit long after a full week of rain. She earned Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex for her second championship point.

At the Lancaster KC show Winners Dog/Best of Winners/Best of Breed again went to Gleanntan Comeflywithme! - "Mick". Elphie went Reserve Winners Bitch to the Open bitch. In the group, Mick was one of six to make the cut. Four of the six terriers to make the cut were professionally handled and two were breeder/owner handled. The top four spots went to terriers that are either ranked #1 in their respective breeds in the U.S. or are in the top three.

Mick is sired by Ch. Finnsky Gladiator out of Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!. He is owned by Gary and Lynn Wolf and Gleanntan.

May 8 - Reunion with "Dog Days" Students at Gettysburg College

Last September and October (2008), Maida and I participated in Gettysburg College's outstanding "Dog Days" event that is offered each fall for the incoming freshmen class at the college. As chronicled on our website, the Skyes were a big hit with a group of students. After Dog Days had ended and during the school year, we kept in contact with some of the students. Recently, one of the students wrote to Maida saying that she was in the midst of final exams and she asked if we could bring the Skyes back to campus for a visit. Final exam week is always stressful and it was hoped that a brief reunion with the "caterpillar dogs" would provide a much-needed respite from studying.

On Wednesday evening, Maida and I visited the college with two pups, Gus (Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz) and Elphie (Gleanntan Defying Gravity). We decided to take just two of the pups because the weather forecast was calling for heavy rain. Sure enough, just as we were getting ready to leave the house, a storm came through with dark skies and wind-driven, heavy rain. 

As it turns out four of the original group of Dog Days students met up with us under the large awning outside of one of the dining halls. The students immediately sat down on the ground to visit with Gus and Elphie as they had done with the Tony, Boz, Bea and Mackenzie during Dog Days. Gus and Elphie have had many socialization sessions so they responded to this opportunity to play with glee. We stayed with the students and chatted for about two hours while Gus and Elphie moved from one lap to the next for belly rubs and behind the ear rubs. Every once in awhile, a student would walk by with an umbrella causing the terriers to perk up and take notice.

This visit reminded us again of what we strive for, and value, in our Skyes - terrier temperament very much intact while at the same time being sociable and confident in their interactions.

We wished the students success with their final exams and a good summer. We also talked about catching up with them at the next Dog Days in September. It will be fun to participate in this event again with the Skyes.

May 1 - 14th Garden State All Terrier Club Show > Terrier Puppy Group 1

Just back from the 14th Garden State All Terrier Club show in West Windsor, New Jersey. While Maida and I attended the first few years of the Garden State show, it is hard to believe that it has been 11 years since we last had an entry there. I decided to enter just one of our Skyes this year, in part, to show support for this terrier group show. It has probably been at least a decade since I went to a show with just one Skye. I was looking forward to having the luxury of being able to focus on just one Skye.

The total terrier entry was 413 and there were specialties/supported entries in ten terrier breeds. The top-winning Scottie bitch from California was present and went on to Best in Show.

The Skye entry this year consisted of our 6 - 9 month puppy dog, Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch) and one other Skye (not one of ours) entered but absent. The show also featured a terrier puppy group. Gus's Best of Breed win meant that he was eligible to compete in both the puppy group and the adult group. Since the weather was nice and cool, I decided to let Gus compete in both groups.

I am pleased to report that Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" earned a Terrier Puppy Group 1, breeder/owner handled. There was a total terrier puppy entry of 57 in 18 different terrier breeds.

April 19 - Potomac Skye Terrier Club Specialty Weekend

We've just returned from three days of shows - the 35th Annual Potomac Skye Terrier Club Specialty (Columbia Terrier Association of Maryland Terrier Group Show) on Friday; the Old Dominion Kennel Club show on Saturday; and the Baltimore County Kennel Club show on Sunday.

The entry for the Potomac Specialty totaled 30 Skyes which is the largest entry that this show has seen since the mid-1990's. Entered all three days from our house were our Finnish import, Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony"; Gleanntan Glorious Legacy - "Mackenzie" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!); Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" and Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch). In addition, Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!) and Gleanntan Laughter Through Tears - "Truvy" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch) were entered and owner/handled by Travis Wright (Truvy was shown on Sunday by Kate Kozeliski). Gleanntan Gale's Grace - "Bailey" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!) was entered all three days and shown by her owner Kate Kozeliski.

Also entered from our house just for the Specialty on Friday was Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea" (Ch. Gleanntan Going For It x Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose) who was shown by a talented junior handler friend of ours who handles her own Smooth Fox Terrier and Papillon. Roxan had two of her Skyes entered at the Specialty on Friday, 11.5 year-old veteran Ch. Gleanntan Gotitxactlyrite - "Arnie" (Ch. Mariquita Flashxclusive x Ch. Gleanntan Great Day O'Pataway) and class dog Gleanntan Desperado (Ch. Gleanntan Gotitxactlyrite x Ch. Gleanntan Goldminersdaughter).

Speaking for ourselves (Michael & Maida) and the five Skyes that we had entered - it was quite a physical workout to prepare five Skyes for the ring not to mention the work in carrying them back and forth to our second floor hotel room. We knew this would be quite a bit of work but we wanted to enthusiastically support the Potomac Specialty and we wanted to have the best representatives of the Gleanntan program represented at such an important show. It is quite likely that there will not be another entry of Skyes this large until the STCA National Specialty in October.

Going into a specialty show with a large entry, it is always our goal to have our Skyes presented in good muscle conditioning and coat conditioning and then you hope that they will stack up favorably against the competition. On the final day of the shows, it was particularly satisfying to have three beautiful Gleanntan girls in the final lineup for Winners Bitch in a fine group of 8 bitches and with a 5-point major to be awarded. The bitch classes at specialties are always highly competitive as it is the bitches that will carry a breeder's line forward in future generations. The final lineup consisted of the Open class winner Gleanntan Gale's Grace - "Bailey" handled by Kate Kozeliski; Bailey's littermate, the Bred by Exhibitor class winner Gleanntan Glorious Legacy - 'Mackenzie" - handled by Michael Pesare and the Puppy bitch class winner Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie" handled by a Skye friend. On this day, the points went to "Mackenzie".

It was a most enjoyable weekend of friendship and excellent Skye competition. I should have a few photos from the weekend posted here soon.

April 12 - Harrisburg Shows

Maida and I were at three of the Blue and Gray Cluster shows in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania this weekend - the Chambersburg Area KC show on Friday; the Harrisburg Kennel Club show on Saturday and the Mason and Dixon KC show on Sunday. The entry was 1-1-1-0 on Friday and 1-2-1-0 on Saturday and Sunday. Our entry consisted of Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus", Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie" and Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony". On Saturday and Sunday, there was one other Skye, an Open class bitch, in addition to our Skyes. Gus earned a single point on Sunday by going Best of Winners. Elphie took Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex on Sunday for her first point. Tony took Best of Breed the three days. He showed very nicely in the group each day. Saturday's show was recorded by Animal Planet and it will be broadcast later in July.

Also, we are so proud of Judy Fatzinger and her two-year old Skye "Duffy" Ch. Gleanntan Going For The Silver (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!) for their accomplishments in Duffy's first obedience competition. Duffy was entered in Novice B in the Harrisburg KC show yesterday and he earned a qualifying score towards his Companion Dog (CD) title. Duffy completed his AKC Championship on Memorial Day Weekend a year ago and since that time, Judy has been enjoying working with Duffy in obedience.

March 29 - Western Pennsylvania Kennel Association shows

Maida and I were at the two Western Pennsylvania Kennel Association shows in Pittsburgh this past weekend. We had four of our Skyes entered: Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus", Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie", Gleanntan Glorious Legacy - "Mackenzie" and Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony". Having four dogs in the ring is a challenge for two handlers (are we gluttons for punishment?). Fortunately, we were able to enlist the help of a very talented junior handler who has had an interest in our Skyes.

Gus and Elphie made their ring debut on Saturday and both showed with joy and poise in the Puppy classes. The total Skye entry consisted of 9 Skyes (3-3-3-0) so all of our charges had competition. Gus was in the ring with two more mature Skyes - one in the Open class and one in the Bred by Exhibitor class. We were delighted when Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" went up to Winners Dog for his first point his first time out. Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie" was also entered in the Puppy class and she went back into the ring to compete for Winners Bitch. Winners went to a Skye bred in Western PA and Reserve Winners Bitch went to Gleanntan Glorious Legacy - "Mackenzie". Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony" took Best of Breed in a field that included two other mature male Specials. The judge was Mr. James Reynolds.

On Sunday, the entry consisted of the same 9 Skyes (3-3-3-0). The judge was Mr. Joe C. Walton. Winners Dog again on Sunday went to Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus". Winners Bitch/Best of Winners/Best of Opposite Sex from the Bred by Exhibitor class went to Gleanntan Glorious Legacy - "Mackenzie". Best of Breed was awarded to our Finnish-bred import Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony". Tony was bred in Finland by Thea and Rolf Dahlbom, Kennel Finnsky and he is always owner/handled by Michael Pesare.

It was an enjoyable and tiring weekend. The David Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh is a beautiful site. But, like most large show sites, you end doing quite a bit of walking. We arrived home by 9:30 p.m., got the Skyes settled, and turned in for an early start to our work week on Monday.

March 22 - New photos

We were home again this weekend as we prepare for a number of shows coming up at the end of the month and in April. Today, we took new photos of Gleanntan Comeflywithme - "Mick" after his bath. We also took Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" and the two pups, Gus and Elphie for an outing to a local park.

Our Tony x Glinda pups are now approaching 6 months of age. It has been just over a month since we took the last round of photos. So, today we took another series of Gus, Elphie and Mia. March 13 - Read Across America - Bea, Gus and Elphie visit with a special needs class

This morning, Maida and I visited a local school to serve as guest readers for the National Read Across America celebration. This was the second of two commitments that we made as last week I visited another school with two of the Skyes. Today, we took three Skyes, four-year old Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea" and two of the six-month old pups, Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" and Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie". We visited with a class comprised of special needs children from grades 2, 3 and 4. When we arrived the school principal greeted us and brought us to the science lab which was set up for our visit. Once again this week, I read the children's version of Greyfriars Bobby. We also had time before and after the reading to answer questions and the kids had plenty of time with the Skyes. The Skyes brought a smile to everyone's face. We handed out color postcards that I created on the story of Greyfriars Bobby. We look forward to participating in next year's Read Across America events.

March 11 - The Skye Terrier

This doesn't necessarily qualify as "news" - I was catching up on back issues of the American Kennel Club Gazette and came upon an article about the Scottish Breeds. The article provided a brief overview of the Scottish breeds. In the words of the author "the hardy dogs of rugged mountain and moor bear testimony to a bygone way of life."

The Skye Terrier: This long, low, hunting terrier was developed on the Isle of Skye, off the coast of Scotland. His shaggy coat protected his body and face from the inclement weather of this wild region. The Skye grew into elegance and fashion in the kennels of Queen Victoria, who made the breed a favorite of English and American gentility. "The Skye is a very good vermin dog, and will hunt anything," declared Stonehenge, in The Dog in Health and Disease.

March 8 - Remembering Donna

This week, we are remembering the March 10, 2001 passing of Donna Dale. This website was created in the days and weeks following Donna’s untimely passing. My goal was to create a visual and accessible history of the Gleanntan Skyes and also to enable friends to keep in touch with the continuing activities of Gleanntan. Every week for the past 8 years, the site has been updated with our show news, activities and general information about the breed.

Many of the Skyes that were alive when Donna was with us have joined her in heaven. But, we are comforted in knowing that a second and third generation form a living legacy that will continue into the future. We do smile when we watch "Mackenzie" (Gleanntan Glorious Legacy), the granddaughter of Donna's beloved "Emily", snuggle up on the sofa just as her grandmother so enjoyed doing during her visits here.

We have dedicated ourselves in our approach to the sport, to the vision set forth by our mentor. This vision was to thoughtfully breed Skyes; to raise them as loving family members; and to present them with pride in the show ring. The value of the shows, for breeder education and for benchmarking one's program, is central to our efforts.

Perhaps Donna's greatest legacy is the memory of her kindness and gifts of self in helping those who had an interest in the breed and her skill in building a warm ring of support around those who were entrusted with her Skyes.

Donna is dearly missed and she remains a part of our lives to this day. Her example continues to inspire us. It is our hope that Donna would look upon our continuation of her life’s work with pride and her wonderful, warm smile.

March 6 - Read Across America

Today, our Skyes once again participated in Read Across America with a visit to a local elementary school. This was my fourth year participating as a guest reader in Read Across America. This year, I decided to bring "Bea" - Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee! and her 5.5 month old niece, "Elphie" - Gleanntan Defying Gravity. Four first and second grade classes were combined into two groups of about 40 students for a reading of Ruth Brown's beautifully illustrated children's version of Greyfriars Bobby. As I commenced with the reading, Bea and Elphie gently visited with the students in the front row. After the reading, I gave the students an opportunity to ask questions about the Skyes and the book. At the conclusion of both sessions, the students were allowed to meet Bea and Elphie in groups of about six at a time. Bea and Elphie made quite a team and I could not have been more proud of their interactions with the children. Next week, we are scheduled for one more visit - this being a visit with a special needs class.

March 4 - Raising awareness of the Skye Terrier: Michael interviewed by Laurie C. Williams for PetLifeRadio Show

At this year's Westminster Kennel Club show, Maida and I met Laurie C. Williams, an accomplished professional dog trainer and writer who was runner-up on the CBS reality TV show Greatest American Dog. Laurie subsequently wrote a wonderful article about her Westminster experience (see link below) and she described meeting us and our Skye Terriers. Laurie is also the host of the DSPN internet radio show (Dog Sports and Performance Network). Laurie invited me to be interviewed on her show and about a week ago we had a 40-minute conversation about Skyes. During the interview, I talked about the origins and history of the breed and the challenges facing a breed with low registration numbers. Laurie was particularly interested in giving her audience insight into what is involved in being a non-professional breeder and exhibitor.

I am grateful to Laurie for her interest in bringing attention to the Skye. I also applaud her efforts to educate the public about the community of purebred dog breeders who are committed to preserving and protecting their respective breeds.

March 2 - New Jersey shows

Maida and I were at the Monticello New York KC and Kennel Club of Northern New Jersey shows this past weekend. The shows were held at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus, New Jersey which is just across the Hudson River from midtown Manhattan. On one hand, one might question the value of our participation in the shows. After all, our Special, Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony" was the only Skye entered. While it is disappointing not to have Skye competition, these shows were well worth our time and effort.

We brought three of Tony and Glinda's kids along for the socialization. With us were Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie", Gleanntan Gift From Auntie Em - "Mia" and Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard of Oz - "Gus" now approaching six months of age. Traveling with the pups provides many excellent opportunities for socialization. The socialization opportunities include time at the hotel room learning how to be good traveling citizens and time at the shows meeting new friends.

A couple of days before the shows, we received an e-mail that ABC was planning to visit the shows to film for an upcoming "Nightline" TV story called "Purebred Hell". The AKC responded on Friday with an excellent, factual e-mail. As it turns out ABC did not come to the shows or at least I didn't see any evidence of them being there. The fancy was well mobilized to deal with a very unfair and one-sided view of the sport. "Hell" would be a world that witnessed the extinction of the vulnerable Skye Terrier or a world where the dog-buying public only had the choice of one of the various designer breeds such as Puggles, Schnoodles or other such high-priced "mutts". Those of us who represent the community of responsible breeders of purebred dogs must continue to work as ambassadors for all purebred dogs.

On Sunday, the show-giving club offered a Meet the Breeds outreach for spectators. I looked at the breeds that were scheduled to be represented and there were no terriers signed up. So, I signed up the three pups Gus, Mia and Elphie. A number of families, comprised of children of all ages, visited the ring. A friend in Scotties stopped by with his young Scottie.

Maida and I enjoyed spending time with long-time Skye breeder/exhibitor, Janet Weiss (Woodwind Skyes), who visited the show both days. We always enjoy "talking Skye" with Janet.

In the competitive arena, we were happy with the way Tony represented the breed in the group. Tony is in beautiful coat and he showed with animation and joy. He made the cut both days in a deep field of terriers.

February 15 - Westminster Article - "Dreams Come True"

In the benching area of the Westminster Kennel Club show, a steady stream of spectators walked past our setup. We spoke with many people who were enjoying the show and asking good questions about Skye Terriers. In the afternoon, we were visited by a woman who discussed her interest in the less popular AKC breeds. We had a nice conversation about Skyes and other breeds that are low in registration numbers.

As it turns out, our visitor was Laurie C. Williams, a professional dog trainer who was runner-up on the CBS reality TV show Greatest American Dog. Laurie also writes a weekly column for the Stafford County (Virginia) Sun newspaper. Below is a link to a wonderful article that she wrote for the February 12th edition of the newspaper. The article contains very interesting historical facts about Westminster and we are thrilled that Laurie enjoyed our Skyes. One correction is that Laurie referred to us as the breeders of both Tony and Bea. While we own both Skyes, Tony was bred in Finland by the Dahlboms/Kennel Finnsky.

February 10 - New Puppy Photos

February 10 - 133rd Westminster KC Show

We've just returned from the 133rd Westminster KC show and here is a brief report and photos. The Skye entry was 4 dogs and 2 bitches with one male absent. Our entry this year consisted of our Finnish import, Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony" handled by me (Michael). Tony was proudly bred in Finland by Thea and Rolf Dahlbom, Kennel Finnsky. We also had our homebred bitch, Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea" handled by Travis Wright. The judge was Mr. Jon Cole. We are proud of the showing of Tony and Bea as Tony earned the single Award of Merit that was awarded and Bea earned Best of Opposite Sex. For those who enter Westminster it is an honor to take the coveted Best of Breed award. Last year, we achieved this honor with Bea's littermate, our beloved Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz". We are thrilled with yesterday's accomplishments of Tony and Bea, particularly since these two Skyes have also been fine producers.

February 8 - 133rd Westminster KC Show

Maida and I are heading to New York City for the 133rd Westminster Kennel Club show. Also, joining us again this year is Travis Wright. Kate Kozeliski will also meet up with us in the city. We have two of our Skyes entered this year, Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony" and Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea". Skyes will be judged on Monday at 12 noon. You can follow the coverage of the show on the Westminster KC website. Television coverage of the show on Monday will be from 8 to 9 p.m. (ET) live on USA Network and from 9 to 11 p.m. (ET) live on CNBC. On Tuesday night, coverage of the show will be from 8 to 11 p.m. (ET) live on USA Network.

February 2

Maida and I were in Wildwood, New Jersey this past weekend for two days of the newly created five-day Atlantic Coast Classic Dog Shows. The shows were held at the beautiful Wildwood Convention Center on the Boardwalk. Last weekend, we were looking out on the frozen Lake Erie. This weekend, we were looking out on the Atlantic Ocean. Much like last weekend's site, the Wildwood Center is a comfortable and spacious facility with plenty of grooming space.

The Skye entry was 0-0-1-1, and consisted of our dog Special, Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony" and our bitch Special Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea". Tony advanced to the group both days and represented the breed well. On Sunday, as we were moving up the line for our turn to be examined, a young girl of about 10 years old came up to ringside and said, "That is a Skye Terrier - I LOVE Skye Terriers." You can imagine that this caught my attention. I let Tony walk up to her so that she could meet him at the ring gait. After the group judging, I brought Tony over to her and he proceeded to give her kisses. He then lay on his side so that he could get his belly rubbed and then before long he was on his back.

We also brought three Tony x Glinda pups along on the trip. Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie", Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus" and Gleanntan Gift From Auntie Em - "Mia" had great fun all weekend and it was another very positive outing for them.

January 26 - Tony - Terrier Group 1 - Erie Kennel Club

Maida and I were at the Erie Kennel Club shows this past weekend. The shows were held at the new Bayfront Convention Center on Presque Isle Bay, Lake Erie. The show site was magnificent and we had panoramic views of the solidly frozen bay at our grooming setup. From there, we were able to watch the ice sailers and ice fishermen enjoying their hobbies. We even had an opportunity to drive the length of the Presque Isle State Park peninsula after Saturday's show.

The Erie Kennel Club heavily promoted their shows in the local newspaper and the shows attracted large spectator crowds.

We had Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony" entered as well as Gleanntan Glorious Legacy - "Mackenzie". With no class competition, we decided not to show Mackenzie. The total Skye entry both days was 0-1-3-0. In addition to Tony, there were two other mature male specials.

On Sunday, Skye Terrier breeder/judge Sandra Goose Allen awarded Best of Breed to Tony. In group competition, Tony took a Group 1. Sandra Allen had judged Tony in his first show weekend three years ago in February, 2006. Tony was just 7 months old at that time and she liked him as a youngster. However, it wasn't until yesterday that she had an opportunity to see Tony again as a mature adult.

It was a thrill to be in the Best in Show lineup with an outstanding group of dogs - the Samoyed, Standard Poodle, American Foxhound, Flat Coated Retriever, Briard and Shih Tzu. The spectators were 4 and 5 rows deep at ringside.

On this show weekend, we also brought two pups along for socialization - Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie" and Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard Of Oz - "Gus". The Bayfront Convention Center provided large, open spaces so we were able to comfortably gait the pups. Because some of the open spaces were near concessions, Elphie and Gus had plenty of opportunities to interact with adults and children. To be able to have these socialization opportunities for the pups was well worth the effort.

January 19

Maida and I were at the Howard County (Maryland) Fairgrounds this weekend for the Carroll Kennel Club and the Annapolis Kennel Club shows. Entered were our two specials, Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony" and Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee! - "Bea". On Saturday, at the Carroll Kennel Club show, Tony took Best of Breed with Bea taking Best of Opposite Sex under judge Mrs. Paula Hartinger. Our friend, Kate Kozeliski handled Bea and she did a superb job. Kate owns Bailey (Gleanntan Gale's Grace) who is out of Bea and sired by Tony. On Sunday, at the Annapolis KC show, Tony again took Best of Breed under judge Alfred J. Ferruggiaro with Bea taking Best of Opposite Sex, handled by Maida. We greatly enjoyed the weekend - visiting with friends and "talking dogs." 

January 7 - Ch. Finnsky Gladiator completes 2008 as the #1 Skye Terrier

It was officially posted today - our Finnish import, Ch. Finnsky Gladiator - "Tony" completed 2008 as the #1 Skye Terrier in the United States (breed points). Up until a few years ago, this award was also know as the Pedigree Award. Tony also finished the year as the #2 Skye Terrier in group points which is based on number of terriers defeated. Tony was owner/handled throughout the year by me (Michael Pesare).

In the years that I have been involved in the sport of purebred dogs, I have always valued and respected the breeder/owner handler approach to the sport. I am particularly proud of the fact that our Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" completed 2007 as the #1 Skye Terrier breeder/owner handled. Now, in 2008, Tony finished as #1 Skye owner/handled. A heartfelt congratulations also go to Tony's breeders, Thea and Rolf Dahlbom, Kennel Finnsky who sent Tony to us.
