News - 2011

An Overview of 2011

Three Gleanntan Skyes completed 2011 in the top 15 for the breed. GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch finished the year as the #1 Skye bitch and the #5 Skye; Ch. Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard of Oz was the #8 Skye although he was shown for only about the final 10 weeks of the year. Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce was the #12 Skye with limited showing.

GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch won one terrier group and she earned a total of 10 group placements. She won BOB at the Potomac Skye Terrier Club Specialty show and at 3 of the 4 Skye Terrier Club of America Supported Entry shows in Canfield, OH. She completed the year with two BOS wins during the Skye Terrier Club of America National Specialty Weekend. In finishing the year as the #1 Skye bitch, she follows in the footsteps of her dam, Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose - "Emily" who was the #1 Skye bitch in 2001 and 2002.

Four Gleanntan Skyes completed their AKC championships in 2011: Ch. Gleanntan Goin' To Show-Me - "Harry" owned and shown by Beth Willis; Ch. Gleanntan Desperado - "Henley" owned and shown by Roxan Rohrich; Ch. Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie" owned and shown by Michael and Maida; and Ch. Gleanntan Showstopper - "Teddy" owned by Barbara Shickley and shown by Maida.

Four of our Skye Terriers earned majors during the STCA National Specialty Weekend - Montgomery County KC and three completed the final points needed for the AKC championship on this important Skye weekend. Of these major wins, a highlight for a breeder was having our Ch. Gleanntan Defying Gravity (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch) earn Winners Bitch (3-point major) at the Skye Terrier Club of America National Specialty at Montgomery County KC to complete her championship title under respected terrier judge Mr. Edd E. Bivin.

NO SE DK CH NORDJW-10 DKW-11 NOW-11 Gleanntan The Goodbye Girl - "Lilly" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch) earned titles in Norway, Sweden and Denmark and she completed the year as the Top Skye Terrier and a Top Ten Terrier in Norway. Lilly is owned and shown by Trond Storsveen, Bonny Hill Skyes, Oslo, Norway.

Also, Gleanntan Laughter Through Tears - "Truvy" earned a major by getting Winners Bitch at the Devon Dog Show Association (STCA Supported Entry) and needs just one major to finish. Truvy is owned and shown by Dr. Travis Wright, Roundabout Skyes.

In England, Hazel and Geoffrey Proud's Gleanntan Gullivers Travels to Dolphaz - "Roscoe" sired a beautiful litter of 4 girls, 3 boys out of Eng. Ch. Salena The Special One - "Angel" bred and owned by Sue and John Breeze, Salena Skyes. The Breezes are the breeders and owners of the Top Skye Terrier in England in 2011.

In February, we acquired Faire Skyes Magical Mystery Tour - "Edith Ann" (Ch. Faire Skyes Magic In The Mist x Ch. Faire Skyes Jay-Roy Hot Toddy) for our program. We are grateful to Edith Ann's breeder, Maryanne Gallagher, of Rochester, NY. Edith Ann earned majors at the Potomac Specialty and at the Hatboro II show in October to complete her championship.

In 2011, Maida and I acquired the Gettysburg home that was owned by our close friends and mentors, Ben and Donna Dale. A number of Gleanntan litters were born and raised here from the early 1990s until Donna's passing in 2001. In December, 2011, a new generation of Gleanntan Skyes was once again born here in Gettysburg when Ch. Gleanntan Glorious Legacy - "Mackenzie" gave birth to 4 girls, 3 boys sired by Ch. Jay-Roy Railway American Anthem.

So completed the 20th year of showing Skye Terriers for Michael and Maida and 41 years of continuous breeding and showing Skyes for Gleanntan Kennels. We are looking forward to all of the promise that 2012 offers!

October 10 - STCA National Specialty Weekend - Four Shows, Four Majors and Three New AKC Champions

Maida and I participated in the four days of the Skye Terrier Club of America National Specialty Weekend. Roxan could not make it this year and we missed her. We had the pleasure of sharing the weekend with our friend, Travis Wright who had two of his Skyes entered.

The STCA Specialty Weekend is four shows over four days - the Hatboro Dog Club shows, the Devon Dog Show Association show and culminating with the Montgomery County Kennel Club Terrier Group Show which is host to the Skye Terrier Club of America National Specialty.

Our entry consisted of our GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch and her offspring sired by Ch. Finnsky Gladiator including, Gleanntan Defying Gravity (Elphie) and Gleanntan Showstopper (Teddy). We also had our Faire Skyes Magical Mystery Tour (Edith Ann) entered. Travis Wright had a third littermate to Elphie and Teddy entered, Gleanntan Laughter Through Tears (Truvy) as well as his Special male, Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce (Cooper).

Here is a quick summary of our results over the four days:

GCH. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch was SELECT Bitch on Thursday (Hatboro) under judge Anne Katona and Best of Opposite Sex on Friday (Hatboro) under Barbara Keenan and Best of Opposite Sex on Saturday (Devon) under judge Miss Mike Macbeth. She was handled all four days by Maida.

Gleanntan Defying Gravity was Winners Bitch on Sunday, the Skye Terrier Club of America National Specialty (Montgomery) for a 3-point major under judge Edd E. Bivin. This gave her the final points that she needed for her AKC Championship title. She was handled to the win by Michael and then returned during BOB judging with our friend Rachel who is a talented junior handler.

When we were having the photo made, Mr. Bivin said, "She is a very nice bitch. She looks like she will make a good brood bitch for you." To me this was valuable and prescient feedback because Elphie's great-grandmother, Ch. Gleanntan Great Day O'Pataway, is the dam of 6 champions; her grandmother, Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose is the dam of 6 champions and her mother, GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch, is the dam of 5 champions to date.

Later in the day, we decided to enter the Eukanuba Breeder's Stakes which was offered after Best in Show. This was the second year that this competition was held and, since we missed last year's Canfield, I wasn't quite sure how the event was run. The brochure did explain that the Breeder's Stakes is a group level competition for breeders and each breeder is required to enter three dogs from at least two different litters. The event provides an opportunity to evaluate the breeder's ability to consistently produce superior dogs of uniform type and conformation.

Our entry, consisting of Glinda, Teddy and Elphie, was a bit unique in that one of our three dogs was the dam of the other two entries. The judge for this competition was Mrs. Catherine B. Nelson, Pennywise Dandies, and the terrier group attracted the largest number of three-dog teams with a total of 16 terrier breeders. Group 1 was awarded to Cindy Cooke's team of Anstamm Scottish Terriers and Group 2 was awarded to our team of Gleanntan Skyes. June 9 - Gleanntan The Goodbye Girl - "Lilly"

We recently received a terrific show report from Trond Storsveen. Trond's Gleanntan The Goodbye Girl (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch) had two successful show outings in Sweden. Here is Trond's report: "First show was on Saturday the 4th. It was held by the Värmland-Dals Terrier Club. The Skyes were judged by Mr. Henrik Johansson, Sweden (Henrikville Yorkies and Pekes). Lilly got a CC and Best of Breed. In the competition of Best Intermediate at the show (between 15 and 24 months of age) she was number 3. The judge for Best In Show was Mr. Joo Schepers from Holland. We are mourning the passing of Ch. Gleanntan Gotanxclusive - "Marcus" (Ch. Mariquita Flashxclusive x Ch. Gleanntan Great Day O'Pataway) who passed away on April 12, 2011. Marcus was the last surviving pup of the litter that Donna lovingly referred to as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". The litter included a single bitch, Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose - "Emily" and seven males. After completing his AKC Championship, Marcus was owned and much loved by Cynthia and Freeman Thibault. Cynthia and Freeman provided Marcus with much love and a wonderful environment and we will forever be grateful to their good ownership of this special Skye.

Best of Breed was awarded to Glinda with her son, Teddy, going Winners Dog/Best of Winners/Best of Opposite Sex. After the breed judging, we spent some time in the Meet the Breeds area with Gleanntan Defying Gravity - "Elphie" and Edith Ann. In the group later in the afternoon, Glinda made the cut in an excellent lineup of terriers.

In the late afternoon, a severe rainstorm came through causing widespread flooding. Unfortunately the Sunday show - Mason & Dixon KC was cancelled as a result of flooding of the Harrisburg Farm Show buildings.

Well placed and carried tail. Moves well. Nice coat and colour."
