December 30 - Int. Ch. Gleanntan The Goodbye Girl - "Lilly" finishes 2012 with a BOB and Group 4

Trond Storsveen had "Lilly" - Int. Ch. Gleanntan The Goodbye Girl (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch) entered in the National Christmas Show in Norway. We are proud to report that she earned Best of Breed and a Group 4. The total Skye entry was 9. There were 170 adult terriers entered in the show with a total entry of 1,800. The judge was Mr. Niksa Lemo from Croatia.

Here is what the judge wrote in his critique: "Very nice type, beautiful head, nice topline, OK hind angulation, correct rear, nice movement and temperament.

We also learned today that Lilly finished 2012 as the Top Skye Terrier in Norway, repeating her end of year standing from 2011.

December 19 - Ending our show year on a high note! Group 3 & Group 2 in Allentown, PA

On the weekend of December 15-16, we had two Skyes entered in the Lehigh Valley KC and Delaware Water Gap KC shows in Allentown, PA. Our entry consisted of GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper", owned by Travis Wright, in BOB and one-year old Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! - "Emma" in the Bred by Exhibitor class. The entry also included a very handsome class male from Canada.

On Saturday, under judge Dennis McCoy, Cooper earned Best of Breed. Emma went Best of Opposite Sex. Cooper went on to earn a Group 3 and Emma earned a Bred-by Exhibitor Group 2.

On Sunday, under judge Richard Powell, Cooper repeated as Best of Breed and Emma was Best of Opposite Sex. Cooper later went on to a Group 2 under judge Powell. There were about 110 terriers entered each day.

Thus ended our successful and active year. Maida and I attended 65 shows in 2012. Our model is the exact same model that we have been following with passion since Gleanntan co-founder, Donna Dale's, untimely passing in 2001. For the past 12 years, we have followed the breeder/owner handler model and we've attended as many of the top level specialties and supported entry shows as possible. We were active in the conformation ring many weekends, while also breeding and raising a litter and working full time.

Over the next couple of weeks, I will compile a "Year in Review" with a fond look back at our year.

December 12

The group win went to Santiago Pinto's Wire. Group 3 went to Lydia Hutchinson's Cairn and Group 4 went to Margery Good's Sealy. It was quite a nice group of terriers and their proud breeders!

On Sunday, under judge Desmond J. Murphy, Cooper repeated as Best of Breed and Emma was Best of Opposite Sex.

Both of the judges were very complimentary of Emma. Below is a photo of Emma in the ring on Saturday, December 8.

On Saturday evening, we had a delightful dinner visit with our dear friends, Bob and Lynn Holtzclaw who live in Winston-Salem. Maida and I first met Bob and Lynn at these shows in 2001 and we have enjoyed visiting with them most every year since that first meeting. About a year ago, Bob and Lynn acquired our "Bea" - Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!. She is maintained is beautiful show coat and is very happy with Bob and Lynn.

August 20 - Skye Terrier Club of America Roving National Specialty - August 17, 18, 19

Maida and I have just returned from the 2012 Skye Terrier Club of America Roving National Specialty in Greeley, Colorado. The specialty was held on Friday with all-breed shows being held on Saturday and Sunday. The STCA supported Saturday's Skye entry and the Columbine Skye Terrier Club supported the entry on Sunday.

Although the Columbine club has hosted roving national specialties in the past, this was our first time participating. Roxan and Donna participated in the 1990s.

This year's specialty drew entries from Colorado, California, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Nebraska, Texas, Missouri, Tennessee and British Columbia, Canada.
Gleanntan's entry for the three shows consisted of GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper" and 8-month old puppy Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! - "Emma". In addition, our friend, Beth Willis, had her Ch. Gleanntan Going' To Show-Me - "Harry" entered.

We flew out of Washington, DC late Wednesday evening and arrived in Denver early Thursday morning. Our friend in Soft Coated Wheatens, who lives in the DC area and in Denver, very graciously offered to help us pick up the Skyes from the cargo terminal and also with transportation to the hotel. What a lifesaver this turned out to be. By the time we arrived at our hotel in Greeley, it was about 3:30 a.m. Fortunately, we had an easy day on Thursday for the dogs to settle in before the shows.

The entry on Friday for the Roving National Specialty consisted of a total of 27 Skyes - 5-7 (8-3) 4 under Cairn Terrier breeder Lydia Coleman Hutchinson. Best of Breed was awarded to a veteran bitch who I have long admired. We were pleased that GCH. Gleanntan Gaelforce was awarded Select Dog and an Award of Merit.

Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! competed in the Sweepstakes and she was the only puppy under judge Deb Ridley. She was awarded Best Puppy in Sweepstakes and then competed in the regular classes. In the regular classes, Emma was Reserve Winners Bitch from the 6-9 month Puppy class with Winners (5-point major) going to the Bred by class winner.

On Saturday was the Greeley Kennel Club show with the Skye Terrier Club of America supporting the entry. The total entry was 20 Skyes - 4-7 (6-3) under judge Robert Black. Best of Breed was awarded to GCH. Gleanntan Gaelforce. Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! again was Reserve Winners Bitch to a 5-point major with Winners going to the Open class winner. Later in the day, Cooper went on to a Group 4 placement in a competitive group with a total terrier entry of 176.

At Sunday's Greeley Kennel Club show, the Skye entry was 22 - 5-7 (7-3) under judge Connie Clapp. This show was supported by the Columbine Skye Terrier Club. Best of Breed was again awarded to GCH. Gleanntan Gaelforce. Winners Bitch for a 5-point major from the 6-9 puppy class was awarded to Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! Later in the day, Cooper made the cut in the terrier group under judge Clay Coady.

Although the days at the shows were busy, Maida, Beth and I took some time on Saturday afternoon to drive a couple of hours west to Estes Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park. We drove in the park up to about 10,000 feet before heading back. A highlight was seeing a herd of elk moving at dusk.

The specialty dinner after the show on Friday was an enjoyable gathering that included a silent and live auction of Skye items. We also enjoyed a fun dinner with our friend in Bedlington Terriers from Pennsylvania.

I will add photos from the weekend soon.

We competed for the first time last year and our Gleanntan Skyes earned a Terrier Group 2. Here is a description of the event from the event brochure: "The Eukanuba Breeder's Stakes is a group level competition for breeders and each breeder is required to enter three dogs from at least two different litters. The event provides an opportunity to evaluate the breeder's ability to consistently produce superior dogs of uniform type and conformation."

This year, we entered GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch, Ch. Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Ch. Gleanntan Gale's Grace under judge Michael Kemp. We are very pleased that our team of Skyes was awarded Terrier Group 1.

July 2 - Southern Maryland KC and Rock Creek KC shows

Maida and I were at the Southern Maryland KC and Rock Creek KC shows this past weekend. The shows were held at a new indoor site this year in Richmond, VA. The clubs made a good decision because the weather for these shows has often been very hot and humid. The indoor, multiple day clusters certainly have their advantages. This year, the high outdoor temperatures were over 100 degrees with severe thunderstorms in the evenings.

Our entry for the two shows consisted of GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper" and three female pups from our December, 2011 litter. Gleanntan First Lady of the Skyes, Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! and Gleanntan Everybody Loves Lucy were in their first shows at just over 6 months of age. Also, Travis Wright had his girl, Gleanntan Laughter Through Tears - "Truvy" entered. The total entry was 0-4-2-0. We learned on Friday that the other male special Skye that Cooper would be competing against, Ch. Of Skyeline Captain Hook earned a nice Best in Show win on Friday.

On Saturday, at the Southern Maryland KC show under judge Peter J. Green, Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex went to Gleanntan Laughter Through Tears. This gave Truvy a 3-point major and the final points for her AKC Championship. Best of Breed went to the previous day's Best in Show winner, Ch. Of Skyeline Captain Hook. Cooper showed beautifully and was the Select Dog.

On Sunday, at the Rock Creek KC show under judge Glenda Dawkins, Truvy was absent. Thus, Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex went to Gleanntan First Lady of the Skyes - "Amelia". This gave Amelia her first two points towards her championship. Captain Hook repeated as BOB and he went on the win the terrier group. Cooper was again Select Dog.

Ollie was from the 1997 litter of eight that was sired by Ch. Mariquita Flashxclusive - "Edi" out of Ch. Gleanntan Great Day O'Pataway - "Rachel". His littermates included Emily, Arnie, Peter, Marcus and Tommy who all made their mark in the show ring. Ollie passed away at nearly 14 years of age - he was the last survivor from that litter. Mike and Wendy's new addition, "Mick"  will join their other Gleanntan Skye named "Sophie" who is 10 years old.

March 13 - Read Across America 2012

On Friday, March 9, Maida and I visited a local elementary school as part of the National Read Across America Celebration. As we have done the past 7 years, we visited with our Skye Terriers and read a book relating to the Skye. For this year’s visit, we read “Henry the Explorer” to about 100 children comprising four 2nd grade classes (divided into two groups - two readings). This year we visited with Glinda (GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch), Elphie (Ch. Gleanntan Defying Gravity) and 12-week old Amelia. After completing the book, we gave the children time for questions and then time to visit with the Skyes. March 7 - Gettysburg College Pre-Vet Club - Presentation on Skye Terriers

This evening Maida and I gave a presentation on Skye Terriers to members of the Gettysburg College Pre-Vet Club. Our presentation highlighted the history of the breed as well as our experiences breeding, owning and showing Skye Terriers. We started with a one-hour presentation in one of the classrooms. We then went outdoors where the students had about 45 minutes of hands-on time with Glinda (GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch) and one of the 12-week old male Clifford x Mackenzie puppies. Needless to say, the pup was a big hit with the students. The evening was great fun and such a good experience for this pup!

February 12 - Garden State All Terrier Club Show

Although we are not entered at Westminster this year, we did have an entry in today's Garden State All Terrier Club show at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus, New Jersey. Our entry consisted of littermates Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper" (pictured right) owned by Travis Wright and Ch. Gleanntan Gale's Grace - "Bailey" owned by Kate Kozeliski. The entry was 0-0-1-1. Best of Breed was awarded to Cooper and BOS was Bailey under judge Clay Cody.

Also over the weekend, Trond Storsveen had his "Lilly" - NO SE DK CH NORDJW-10 DKW-11 NOW-11 Gleanntan The Goodbye Girl in her first two shows of 2012 in Dal, Norway.

On Saturday, February 11 at the NBK National show, the judge was Bjoerg Foss, Norway (Xploring Whippets). Lilly was awarded CK (Champion quality) BOB and Group 4.

The judge's critique is as follows: Very nice bitch with excellent proportions. Well shaped and very feminine head. Correct ears. Sufficient length of and well placed neck. Long in ribs. Correct placed and carried tail. Moves well. Keeps topline well. Excellent coat quality.

On Sunday, February 12 at the NWCK National show, the judge was Britta Roos-Boerjesson, Sweden (Busheys Sealyham) and Lilly was awarded CK (Champion quality) BOB. She was also among the final 6 in the terrier group.

The judge's critique is as follows: Magnificent in type and presentation. Beautiful well shaped head. Shoulder placement quite good, but would prefer straighter front legs. Coat quality first class. Excellent hindquarters. Moves and shows well.

February 11

For those who are involved with the sport of purebred dogs, everyone’s attention is now turned to the awe-inspiring Westminster KC show in New York City. In the past decade, Gleanntan has had at least one entry in eight Westminster shows and Gleanntan's participation at Westminster goes back to the 1970s. Westminster holds many precious memories of beautiful dogs and fun time spent with friends.

A singular highlight for me (Michael) was the Best of Breed win of our Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme – “Boz” at Westminster, 2008. To be in the group ring later that evening with a breeder/owner handled dog is a memory that I will long cherish. Roxan handled her beloved "BG" - Ch. Gleanntan T’Roc O’Gibraltar to Best of Breed fourteen years earlier, in 1994, under the late Dr. Josephine Deubler.

We are missing the Westminster Kennel Club show this year. Although our GCH. CH. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch – “Glinda” qualified for Westminster by finishing in the top 5 Skyes in the U.S. in 2011, we decided to retire Glinda from serious competition at the end of last year. Glinda had the distinction of earning Best of Opposite Sex at Westminster in 2010 and 2011 as her dam did in 2002.

For 2012, we are starting a new special, Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce – “Cooper” and we hope that Cooper will earn the honor of competing at Westminster in February, 2013.

To all who are competing this year - in the breed rings and in Junior Showmanship - we wish you the very best of luck!

During the weekend of January 28-29, Gleanntan Gottamakereservations - "Tara" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch) was entered in the Golden Gate Kennel Club shows in Daly City, California. The entry on Saturday was 1-2-1-2. We were delighted that Tara went all the way to Best of Breed  on Saturday over 3 specials for a 3-point major. The judge was Miss Virginia L. Lyne. Tara needs just one point to complete her AKC championship. Tara is owned by Carol G. Fink and co-owned by Sally George & Gleanntan and shown by Sally George.

Also during the weekend of January 28-29, Beth Willis had Tara's littermate, Gleanntan Goin' To Show-Me - "Harry" in the two St. Charles MO KC shows. Harry was the single Skye entry and he earned Best of Breed both days.

During the weekend of January 21-22, we had Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x Ch. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!) entered in the Carroll KC show and the Annapolis KC show in West Friendship, Maryland. Cooper was the single Skye entry. This past weekend we had Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper" and Gleanntan Laughter Through Tears - "Truvy" entered in two of the Fredericksburg, Virginia shows. Sunday was the Chesapeake KC of Maryland's show. Cooper again took BOB and Truvy was BOS under judge Mrs. Karen C. Wilson.

We were delighted that Cooper went on to a Group 4 under Karen Wilson. We could not be happier to be in the company of a lovely final lineup that included a very typey new Norfolk, a BIS-winning Parson Russell Terrier and a BIS-winning Scottie.

Cooper is owned by Dr. Travis S. Wright and Gleanntan and Truvy is owned by Travis.

January 9 - A New Year Begins!

Roxan, Travis Wright and I were at the Rubber City Kennel Club shows in Tallmadge, Ohio this past weekend. Maida stayed home to keep an eye on our three-week old litter of pups. Gleanntan Givemebusybee!) owned by Travis Wright & Gleanntan.

On Saturday, under judge James Ham, Cooper earned Best of Breed and he went on to make the cut in a well-represented terrier group. Truvy was Best of Opposite Sex.
