News - 2013

The Year in Review

The end of 2013 provided an opportunity to reflect on our year and to look ahead to the upcoming new year.

I had tremendous admiration for my mentors, Gleanntan co-founders Donna and Ben Dale. My admiration was based, in part, on observing their long-term, consistent effort to nurture a family of healthy, well-socialized Skyes year after year without interruption. I always felt that breeders such as Donna and Ben played an important role in helping to preserve our low-registration numbers breed.

For the past 13 years, we have shown our Gleanntan Skyes in about 60-75 shows a year. We have been blessed to be able to take our mentors’ work forward with an approach that also applies a consistent effort to producing new generations of Gleanntan Skyes and showing the Skyes at all-breed and specialty shows.

We hold firm to the belief that the shows are where knowledge is acquired and transferred. While the internet and social media are useful ways to augment knowledge, there is no substitute for being “in the moment” at shows, talking to serious dog people in other breeds, and observing great dogs in many breeds.

Here are the highlights of our year:

GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard of Oz - Gus - was the #1 Skye in the U.S. through September and he finished the year as the #2 Skye (breed points) and the #3 Skye (group points). Gus earned 13 group placements including a Group 1 at the last show of the year. Gus follows his sire, “Tony” - Ch. Finnsky Gladiator and his dam, “Glinda” GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch as a group winner.

Westminster Kennel Club Best of Breed - In February, 2013, GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce - Cooper earned Best of Breed in a strong field of 7 Skyes under judge David A. Alexander.

In 2013, we finished three new champions - Ch. Gleanntan Everybody Loves Lucy - Lucy, Ch. Gleanntan First Lady of the Skyes - Amelia and Ch. Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! - Emma) - all from our December, 2011 litter. Two of these beautiful, typey girls had excellent results in October during our national specialty weekend. Lucy earned Awards of Merit at Hatboro I and at the STCA National Specialty/Montgomery. Amelia earned Best of Opposite Sex (5-point GCH. major) at Hatboro II. In doing so, she defeated 9 high-quality specials bitches, including the 2013 specialty BOB winner. She also was Select Bitch at the Devon show (5-point GCH. major).

In January, we imported a promising 5-month old puppy dog, Dexter Jetser Bohemia Skywalker - Dexter, from the Kennel Bohemia Skywalker in the Czech Republic. Dexter started his show career in April and earned a Best in Sweepstakes at the Potomac Skye Terrier Club Specialty. Later in the year, Dexter was Reserve Winners Dog (to a 5-point major) at Hatboro I and Devon and Winners Dog for a 5-point major at Hatboro II at just over 14 months of age.

In July, our Ch. Gleanntan Defying Gravity - Elphie gave birth to a litter of 4 pups sired by Multiple Best in Show-winning Ch. Cragsmoor Good Time Charlie. We have retained two pups from that litter - a dog - Gleanntan Can’t Take My Eyes Off You - Murry and a bitch - Gleanntan Oh My Goodness - Mellie. A third, Gleanntan Thoroughly Modern Moxie - Moxie will also be shown. We are very excited about this litter - they have beautiful breed type and excellent movement.

In closing, we are thankful to all of the wonderful people who own Gleanntan Skyes. We love to hear how your Skyes are such cherished family members.

2014 promises to be another year of "making memories", with youngsters showing in the classes and a special being campaigned, as always, breeder/owner handled.

May 28 - Memorial Day Weekend Shows - New Castle, Pennsylvania

Maida and I had two Skyes entered in the Saturday, Sunday and Monday shows of the five Memorial Day Weekend shows in New Castle, PA. Our entry consisted of GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard of Oz - "Gus" in Best of Breed competition and 17-month old Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! - "Emma" in the Open class.

We first attended these shows 15 years ago and we've attended most every year since then. We always enjoy these shows because there is always keen Skye competition. The show grounds are nicely laid out and the atmosphere is relaxed. There are a number of specialties held over the five days, including Kerry Blue Terriers. We enjoy watching competition in Kerries.

On Saturday, at the New Castle KC show, the Skye entry was 2-4-2-2 under judge Darrell Vice. Best of Breed was awarded to Gus. Emma earned Winners Bitch/Best of Winners for a 3-point major. Later in the day, Gus made the cut in the terrier group.

On Sunday, at the Trumbull County KC show, the Skye entry was 0-3-2-2 with one class bitch and one male special absent under judge Don Evans. Best of Breed went to Gus. Emma repeated as Winners Bitch (1 point). In the terrier group, Gus was one of 6 in a final cut that included at least 3 multiple BIS-winning dogs, including the Kerry Blue Terrier that went on to BIS that day.

On Monday, Memorial Day, at the New Castle KC show, the Skye entry went back up to 2-3-2-2 with one class bitch and one special dog absent under judge Karen Wilson. Best of Breed went to Gus. Emma earned Winners Bitch/Best of Winners (1 point). For the third day, Gus made the cut in the terrier group.

We could not be happier with Gus's three days of Best of Breed wins and three days of making the cut in tough terrier group competition. We are also thrilled with Emma's showing. By earning Winners Bitch all three days, she earned her second major and two single points and now needs just a single point for her AKC championship.

At the Chester Valley KC show, Gus was awarded BOB and Emma was Best of Opposite Sex under judge Richard W. Powell. On Sunday, at the Lancaster KC show, Gus repeated as BOB and Emma was BOS. Gus then went on to make the cut in the group under judge Beth Sweigart. There were plenty of quality terriers both days. May 6 - Garden State, Bucks and Trenton

On Friday, May 3, Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5, we had two Skyes entered in the Garden State All Terrier Club show, the Bucks County KC show and the Trenton KC show. This was the 20th annual Garden State All Terrier show. Maida and I attended the first Garden State show in 1993 and we have had a number of memorable successes there. In 1996, on a cool, pouring rain day, our very first Gleanntan Skye, Ch. Gleanntan Sonsie Solway Maid - "Fiona" earned the final major for her AKC Championship at this show. Ben and Donna were there to share in Fiona's success. Thirteen years later, 7.5 month old Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard of Oz - "Gus" was Best Puppy in Show at the 2009 Garden State show.

This year, Gus returned to Garden State (and Bucks and Trenton) as a Special. We also had our 8-month old import, Dexter Jetser Bohemia Skywalker entered in the 6-9 month Puppy class the three days. The total Skye entry was just our two Skyes - 1-0-1-0.

Gus earned Best of Breed on Friday under judge Edna K. Martin, at Bucks County KC under judge Lydia C. Hutchinson, and at Trenton KC under judge Rhonda Davis.

On Saturday, at the Old Dominion KC show, our entry consisted of our 12-18 month old bitch, Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! - "Emma" and Dexter (who was absent) and Gus under judge Mareth K. Kipp. Emma was second in her class.

March 17 - York, PA shows - Gleanntan's 109th Champion!

Maida and I had three Skyes entered in two of the five Celtic Classic shows in York, PA. Entered in the Saturday and Sunday Delaware County KC shows were Ch. Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard of Oz - "Gus" (pictured right) and 15-month old litter sisters, Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! - "Emma" and Gleanntan First Lady of the Skyes - "Amelia".

On Saturday, the Skye entry was 0-3-2-0 under judge Robert Hutton. Best of Breed was awarded to Gus. Winners Bitch/Best of Opposite Sex for 2 points went to Amelia. Later in the day, Gus made the cut in a deep terrier group.

On Sunday, the entry was 0-3-2-0 under judge Judith Thill. Best of Breed again went to Gus and Winners Bitch/Best of Opposite Sex went to Amelia. Reserve Winners Bitch went to Amelia's litter sister, Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! Later in the day, Gus once again made the cut in the terrier group.

Sunday's win gave Amelia the final points she needed for her AKC championship. Amelia is Gleanntan Kennels' 109th AKC champion. This promising youngster earned two 5-point majors on our national specialty weekend last October at only 9 months of age. That included getting Winners Bitch at the Skye Terrier Club of America National Specialty at Montgomery County KC. Now, we will continue to nurture Amelia and allow her to mature with the hope of returning her to the ring at some future point.

March 1 - Read Across America 2013

For the eighth consecutive year, Maida and I participated in the National Read Across America Day with our Skye Terriers. In 2006, we participated with "Emily" - Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose. This year, we participated with Emily's granddaughter, Ch. Gleanntan Glorious Legacy - "MacKenzie" and her great-granddaughter, Gleanntan Got Busy Bee! - "Emma". Joining us this year was our newest addition, 6.5 month old Dexter Jetser Bohemia Skywalker.

The purpose of the Read Across America celebration is to recognize the value of books and reading in broadening the horizons of children. Each of our visits involved the legendary Greyfriars Bobby story and plenty of time to visit with the Skyes. This year, we read to about 70 students from second grade classes in two 30-minute sessions. Needless to say, Dexter the puppy was a big hit with the kids.

February 18 - Cooper earns Best of Breed at the 137th Westminster KC show

At the prestigious 137th Westminster Kennel Club show, GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper" earned Best of Breed in a field of 7 Skye champions. The judge was bull terrier breeder, Mr. David A. Alexander. Cooper's owner, Travis Wright, joined us at the show so he was able to see Cooper's win. It gives us pride that 5 years ago, Cooper's uncle, Ch. Gleanntan Gottalookatme - "Boz" also earned Best of Breed at Westminster.

February 5

On Sunday, February 3, we entered "Dexter" - Dexter Jetser Bohemia Skywalker in the Catoctin Kennel Club Match. We thought this would be a good first outing for Dexter because the show site is close to home and the judge has considerable experience with terriers. We were delighted with the way Dexter showed in his first outing. He earned Best Terrier Puppy in Match under judge Dr. Valeria Rickard, Joval Airedale Terriers. Below is a photo of Dexter, taken by our friend Christa Mcchancy.

January 27 - Welcome Dexter!

On Friday, January 25, we welcomed a new arrival here at Gleanntan. 5.5-month old Dexter Jetser Bohemia Skywalker has come to us from Jaroslava Serak, Kennel Bohemia Skywalker, Prague, Czech Republic. Dexter's grandfather is Int. Ch. Gleanntan Grand Musicmaker - "DJ" (Ch. Gleanntan Greatxplorer x Ch. Sonsie Aida) who was from our litter of 10 that was born in December, 2001. We adore this youngster's strength of bone and muscle. He has a harsh, crisp coat. His has a lovely profile and he is a balanced mover front and rear.

Below is a photo that Maida and I took the day after he arrived.
