September 14 - A September to Remember!

On September 10, 2014, our Ch. Gleanntan Glorious Legacy - "Mackenzie" gave birth to three pups - 2 dogs, 1 bitch. The sire is our import from the Czech Republic: Ch. Dexter Jetser Bohemia Skywalker - "Dexter".

And on September 14, 2014, our Ch. Gleanntan Everybody Loves Lucy - "Lucy" gave birth to four pups - 2 dogs, 2 bitches. The sire of this litter is our GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Gaelforce - "Cooper".

A bit of Gleanntan Trivia: Twenty years ago, in 1994, Gleanntan co-founders, Donna and Ben Dale, bred three Gleanntan girls in a six-week period. From July, 1994 to late August, 1994, these three Gleanntan girls had litters that would go on to play in an important role in the future of Gleanntan Kennels. How I remember Donna saying that sometimes as a breeder, you have to be willing to stretch a bit to further your goals. We are reflecting on the legacy of our mentors and we are looking forward to watching these new Gleanntan pups mature.

We have attended many shows at this site over the past 25 years and many fond memories were made here. For example, in 1994, Maida and I were in Gettysburg, visiting with our dear friends and mentors Ben and Donna Dale. Donna asked if I would be willing to show Ch. Gleanntan Gotheriteonebaby - "Ray" who was entered in the shows as a special. We later returned home to Rhode Island with Ray and entered him in the Scenic New England Circuit of shows in New Hampshire. I greatly admired Ray's strong breed type and today, twenty years later, we are showing a pretty great-great granddaughter of Ray.

At the Catoctin KC show on July 3, the Skye entry was 0-1-1-1 under judge Mr. Geir Flyckt-Pedersen. BOB was awarded to GCH. Cragsmoor Good Time Charlie who is having a banner year under the guidance of his handler, Larry Cornelius. Charlie is the #1 terrier in the U.S. and the #3 dog all breeds. BOS was awarded to Amelia.

At the Northeastern Maryland KC show on July 4, under judge Judith Daniels, BOB was awarded to Amelia as Charlie was absent (he went to other shows for the remainder of the weekend). Winners Bitch went to Mellie. Later in the day, in the terrier group, Amelia made the cut in a strong terrier group (total terrier entry of 131 dogs).

At the Upper Marlboro KC show on July 5, under judge Lydia Hutchinson, BOB was awarded to Amelia. Winners Bitch went to Mellie. These shows are beneficial for Mellie as she gains more ring experience.

At the National Capital KC show on July 6, under judge Julie Felton, BOB was awarded to Amelia and Winners Bitch was awarded to Mellie. Amelia showed beautifully in the group - smooth gait and with happiness.

All-in-all in was a fun weekend. We got to visit with friends in other terrier breeds and we watched judging in quite a few breeds and some junior showmanship. I also ended up in the Scottie ring and the Bedlington ring today, helping out friends.

July 3

Last week, Maida and I visited our dear friend, Carol Fink, in Wine Country - Yountville, California. We had a chance to visit with her lovely "Tara" - Ch. Gleanntan Gottamakereservations (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch). Below is a photo of Carol and Tara in Van De Leur Park in Yountville. Tara was shown to her AKC championship by Sally George. The last time Maida and I saw Tara was 4 years ago when I showed her at the Skye Terrier Club of Southern California Specialty. At the time, she was just a 9-month old puppy. She has matured into a beautiful adult with a sweet personality.

March 4 - Read Across America

This morning, Maida and I visited a local elementary school as part of the National Read Across America celebration. For the ninth consecutive year, we visited the school with a group of our Skye Terriers and we read the children’s version of Greyfriars Bobby. At the start, I described to the children how Maida and I discovered the Skye Terrier 25 years ago. While the Greyfriars Bobby novel created the initial curiosity, it was my finding Dr. Montgomery’s book in the local library that really promoted our interest. And the rest is history so to speak….

As you can see in the photos, Cooper, Lucy and Mellie worked their magic with the second-grade students. Cooper was the star as he moved from student to student, giving many kisses. After I finished the book, we took questions from the students and they asked many good questions.

While surely this morning’s visit was another activity in the students' busy day, I think that many of them will go home and tell their parents about their unusual visitors. The students were given pencils and a color postcard created by Maida. The postcard featured breed information and a bibliography of children's books on the breed. The teaching and support staff at this elementary school love the Skyes. One of the teachers noted that she will be visiting Edinburgh this coming summer and she is now going to visit the Greyfriars Bobby statue.

March 1 - Farewell David - Ch. Gleanntan Getouttadodge

Today we said a tearful goodbye to our dear David - Ch. Gleanntan Getouttadodge (Ch. Gleanntan Going For It x Ch. Gleanntan Grandxpose) at just over 13 years of age. We have so many memories with this sweet Gleanntan boy. He was our last Skye born while Donna was alive (he was born just 4 months before Donna unexpectedly passed away in March, 2001). Dave was named by Donna in honor of Maida's father because he was born the morning that Dave Connor passed away. After Donna's passing, Dave spent quite a bit of time with us when Ben was traveling. After Ben passed away, Dave became the patriarch of our Skye family. He spent his days holding court here in the kitchen at the center of our daily activities. He loved his cookies and the stray kibble that would fall on the floor at feeding time. It comforts Maida, Roxan and me to know that Dave is now sitting on the couch with Donna and Ben in Heaven.

We had a most enjoyable time at this year's Westminster Kennel Club show. Our entry this year was GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Wonderful Wizard of Oz - "Gus" (Ch. Finnsky Gladiator x GCH. Ch. Gleanntan Glindathegoodwitch). As the #2 Skye in the U.S. in 2013, Gus was one of the top 5 Skyes invited to enter Westminster. The entry this year consisted of 7 Skyes (5 dogs, 2 bitches) under breeder/judge Dr. Richard Meen, Kishniga Skyes, Canada. Gus turned in a good performance but did not place on this day. Below is one of my favorite photos from the day.

January 27 - Murry and Mellie make their ring debut

Maida and I took Murry (Gleanntan Can't Take My Eyes Off You) and Mellie (Gleanntan Oh My Goodness) to the Lehigh Valley KC Match yesterday. These two pups are from our July, 2013 litter sired by Ch. Cragsmoor Good Time Charlie out of our Ch. Gleanntan Defying Gravity. We entered the two 6-month old pups in the sweepstakes in the morning and then the match in the afternoon. Both pups gaited and stacked well. Murry, handled by Maida, even won his 6-9 month puppy class in a field of 6 different terriers.

January 20 - A New Year Begins

Maida and I had one Skye entered in the Carroll Kennel Club and Annapolis Kennel Club shows on Saturday, January 18 and Sunday, January 19. Our entry was two-year old Ch. Gleanntan First Lady of the Skyes - "Amelia" (Ch. Jay-Roy Railway American Anthem x Ch. Gleanntan Glorious Legacy). Amelia was the single Skye entered. The overall terrier entry was strong with excellent representation in a many of the terrier breeds.

On Saturday, Amelia earned BOB under judge Sharol Candace Way and she went on to a Group 4 placement in an entry of 111 terriers. On Sunday, Amelia was BOB under Canadian judge Joe Lobb.

This young girl has a bright future ahead. In 2012, as a 9+ month old, Amelia was Winners Bitch during the Montgomery Weekend - Hatboro II and the Skye Terrier Club of America National Specialty. During the specialty weekend this past year, Amelia was handled to perfection by Maida and Amelia was Best of Opposite Sex at Hatboro II and Select Bitch at Devon.
